Tires coming off wheels

OK here is the deal. I bought Steel wheels for my BFG TA mudders. I just got a flat tire. I went to the store and came back. I then forgot something so i went back out . in the time it took which was about 10 mins my tire was flat to the rim. I took it in to see what was up and they told me its the steel wheels. they get many 4x4 pickups with the steel wheels and the tire wont stay on. WHAT??? ive never heard such a foolish thing.. I bought the steel wheels so i didnt scratch up my aluminum wheels. The guy told me to put back on the aluminum wheels because it has a better lip.. This makes no sense to me any input??? should i do that???

americas tire company was where i went.. He did say i got a little bit of mud inside the tire.. WHAT??? i havent even been in the mud yet. I just got these tires and they have only seen pavement. im so confused.. I seriously didnt want to put back on my aluminum wheels i do know they have a larger lip than the steel wheels but darn i really dont want to be banging them up in moab.. so do i go buy another set of aluminum wheels ? or forget what this joker is saying?

This guy is seriously jerking you around. Unless you have damaged the rim, holding a bead should not be a problem just bacause you have steel wheels. Heck a lot of vehicles are still sold with steel rims from the factory! Make them fix the problem...free, If not let them know you will be making a call to the BBB and the state attorney generals office to report their business practices. Dont let them get away with this one. After they fix it I would not go back to them.

nolakj is running black steelies with BFG MT's and his are fine
I am running OE steelies on my TJ with "cheepo" remington mud brutes and I run on the trails at ~17psi and have never lost a bead
I have put large holes in the side walls but never lost a bead even with 0 psi trying to find flat ground

I would do as jeger said make them fix it or take "action"

Go back in and tell him you went home and looked in the mirror and no where on your forehead did you see STUPID written on it! :lol:

The only way a steel rim could be "leaking" is if it had been bent REAL BAD or was welded incorrectly when it was made. Have them put it in a tank of water and show you where it is leaking, or where the problem is. I think he is full of....it. I would check the valve stems real well, I have seen steel wheels that had a little burr around the valve stem hole and created a small leak after driving for a while.

I got these wheels December 29th so i havent had them on long at all. the steel wheels are factory direct wheels from jeep. no problems not even a scratch on the wheel. I have only put 225 miles on the tires so it caught me by surprise that i had this flat.
I didnt find any nail or anything in these .. They said they found mud because it broke the bead. uuumm not possible. No mud on the pavement.
I talked with the manager about an hour ago and said that it possibly didnt seat well when the put it on originally and that if it pops off again they will replace the tire. They also said becareful when deflating the tire as not to deflat to much (duh) that it might pop the bead again.. ok well that kinda concerns me because i do plan on deflating it a bit for moab. if this is going to be the case ill go out right now and buy another set of aluminum wheels. Im assuming the tire is defective if it happends again..
anyone deflated there BFGs???

I've deflated my BFG AT's down to18 psi with no problem,they do design them for low pressure situations with a bead lock type set up, they can handle low pressure, regular wheelin 18 - 23 psi, beach wheelin 11 - 14 psi

Is this guy mentally challenged? Ask the manager to write this issue up on the work report... he won't because it is completely idiotic.

He probably has defective tires or workmanship :roll:

some of the cheaper steel wheels have very bad welds at the seem. i have seen this cause the tires to go flat like that. the fix is to have them dismounted & use a file or grinder to make sure the welds are SMOOTH. then shoot with a little paint & remount.

I run steel rims and ive never had problems with them coming off on or offroad. Ive never aired down past 28psi, but they did just fine at the pressure.

i know guys running steel and airing down to 10 psi
I run steel with the cheepo tires I have and I dont think twice about airing down to 16-18 psi
to air down BFG's to 18 psi shuld be no biggie I would say the tire is bad

I replaced the tire and went out the next day with a bunch of people. I dropped my pressure to 18psi.. I drove all day and 2 days later im still at 18psi no problems. so with that said it may have been the tire. I was told by another guy on the trip that if he is on a narly trail he drops down to 10-12 psi on Wrangler (les shwaub specials) tires. Um first off could that be true? and someone else told me there running 80lbs on the road on the same wrangler tires.
btw those wrangler tires got them stuck several times where i did not get stuck even once on my BFG.
Thank you for your support on the tire subject. Had i not had this forum i wouldnt have traded in that tire till i had another problem.. thanks guys.

I had winter tires installed on the wifes car, on steelies and the one rear tire went flat. Turns out the valve stem was not sealing. Could hear the hissing when i moved the stem around. Put a new one in and it has been fine ever since.
