Nitrogen in tires?

Post subject:  Nitrogen in tires?
Okay so yesterday I became the proud owner of some brand new Bridgestone A/T Revos from Costco. THe only thing is, they filled them with NITROGEN?! What the crap folks?! Should I keep them filled with nitrogen or have my Jeep dealer replace it with air? I think that it'd be kind of hard to air-down your tires for off-roading, then fill them back up with air afterwards when the majority of your pressure if nitrogen. Am I thinking about this too much ( :shock: ) or should I have air put in them?

Nitrogen is less susceptible to expansion/contraction in heat/cold and has various other nice properties.

"Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas used to inflated airplane tires, off-road truck tires, military vehicle tires, and race car tires for improved performance. Oxygen is compressed air permeates through the tire wall, oxygen oxidizes the rubber compounds in the tire, causing under inflation and deteriorated rubber. Dry nitrogen will prevent auto-ignition, will not corrode rims, and helps the tire to run cooler."

If you're offroading and airing up and down, I don't believe there's a feasible way to keep your airs filled with nitrogen (although air is about 78% nitrogen...so you're only about 22% off. ;) ) The only choices I know of are air (using a compressor) or CO2 (tank).

Don't worry about it. But if you want I can tell you where to find almost 80% Pure Nitrogen for free :wink:

That would be interesting Eddo- you aren't talking about air are you?

We were up in the mountains last summer, and my Bro's Dodge 2500 developed a flat. We took the kegerator apart and fabbed it up to put the CO2 in the tire to limp it to get air/repair lol.

My neighbor's son had a set of Duelers installed on his Jeep and they filled them with nitrogen. Only problem is they only filled them up to 33psi, and he gets his best MPG at 35, so he added two pounds of AIR into each tire, ontop of the nitrogen. It threw them slightly out of balance.

The entire point of Nitrogen in them is it's supposed to be more stabler
