How good or bad are the Wrangler HP 235/65/17 factory tires? I tried to search and did not come up with useful threads.

About all I can say is that they work very well in soft sand. I haven't even had to air them down yet. With 6,000 miles on them they seem to be wearing ok, so far. I was a bit surprised that I didn't put a sharp rock through the sidewall on one off-road outing although, that was probably LUCK.

When I finally manage to wear them out, I'll put on something with a a stronger and a bit stiffer sidewall. So far, 245/65/17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors are at the top of my list.

Many people simply hate them.
They are OK on dry pavement and on stable soil. Other condition, wet pavement, snow, bumpy roads, etc.. It is not good. They also hydroplane like speedboat!
Also, many people replaced them with what sandracer mentioned, however you have to watch out for clearance on that 245 size. For me, it would be a very tight fit with some rubbing, I am sure! So consider fortera triple tread or fortera silent armors at stock size, instead. (That's what I am doing), or Pirelli Scorpions (some complained about flat spots after sitting too long)

Yep, I have some problems with rubbing. Most spots were taken care of by cutting the plastic inner fender and pounding the spot weld. I have driven in heavy rain, sand and loose dirt with no problems. I like them!

I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate those tires! THEY SUCK! They wear about like a brick but they are HARD. I slide all over the place. I can hardly pull out when its raining without getting killed. They were fine for the first 15k or so miles but at 26k, they SUCK! Do NOT get those tires. They cost way to much for what they are. There are far better tires out there. Just look at the ratings on tirerack.com..

Ive beat the heck outta them offroad though. Theyve got chunks of rubber missing. :twisted:

i think he also did 360 with them on some highway..

I did have a pretty bad experience myself, on snow/ice mix service road last winter with these darn wrangler tires. :)
i posted somewhere here or at jeepKJ...

I am watching out for a good deal on forteras... i was quoted $175 each mounted, balanced, etc..
