Hey,
I want to upgrade my tires to BFG AT's and would also like to change wheels. I've been looking at the Cragar Soft 8's and was wondering if it was a bad idea to get them because I use my KJ as my daily driver and do more on road driving than off road. Will the Cragars hurt my MPG's as opposed to me just putting the new tires on my stock 16" aluminums? IS there any other downside to steel wheels other than weight? I want to get them mainly becasue they look better then my stock wheels do. What do you guys think?

Steel is heavier and stronger, that is all.

Whats the weight difference between a 16x7 Soft 8 and a stock 16x7 aluminum?

I know my 16x7 soft 8's are 29lbs a piece and the stock wheels/tires that came with my KJ (235/70 SRA'a and the limited rims) weighed about 47lbs together.

the main issues will be weight and back spacing
the weight will give bad mpg and if you push the tires out they cause wind drag wich also gives poor mpg
the BFG AT may not be as bad as say an MTR they will by nature not get the same mpg as the stockers even the same size
also if you change the b/s on your rims you change the geomotry of the way the suspension and steering work now wich COULD lead to rubbing issues

IMO keep the alum stockers or buy some alum's with the same b/s as the stockers

IMO....there's already soooo many things thats already going to damage your mileage a little.I mean if you never plan on...driving against the wind,locking it in on bad or snowy roads,a little towing from time to time,wheeling a trail,or just accelerating a little hard now and then.....you might consider keeping your stock wheels.Oh yeh...keep a good coat of wax on her,cause I'm sure with some testing it would cause less wind drag.I mean I hate to be pestamistic here, but for all of the things that your libby is capable of,it's worth another gallon or two of fuel.So my guess would be yes it will use a little more fuel....but I'd bet no more than 1 to 2 miles per gallon.Sorry to rant,but this is one sore topic for me.Thats why I bought mine,to do all that it's capable of.

I think the main thing you need to consider when getting new rims & rubber is what do you want to do with it. That should make the choice real easy. At least that's how I made my choice
