17 inch rim questions

I have been looking around and haven't seen much on these subjects.
1. Why does every one want a smaller size rim?
2. My KJ came with 17's stock, I want to be able to run a 32x10.5 in tire(after Frankenlift and all) will I have to swap to a smaller rim? wheel well mods are no prob, but will it stuff up in there?

Not every one wants smaller rims but some have to due to wanting a certain size tire. 17 inch tires are harder to find in sizes that will work on a Liberty. You have to be careful of width more than anything. A 32-10.50 is going to really fill up the fenders. Also some people like a 15 inch so that when they air down there is more side wall there to flex. Big difference say in flexing a 32 inch tire on a 15 inch a rim and a 17 inch. And then there are a lot of people who still think anything much over a 16 inch rim is getting into the bling thing. You see a lot of Rubi owners going back to 15s also just for more choices and better prices as compared to larger size rims

Anything wider than 245 with 17s will cause rubbing, or wont even work, even if you lift it. Even 245s require slight modification to run without any problems.
I have 17s, and I am staying at stock tire size when I am getting new tires. If I want to change my rims, I would go up to 18, and not down to 16.

After spending a couple of hours reading posts on tires I gathered that it was for tire choices. I will propably have to go down to 15's, I want some good off road tires. Thanks for answering my question.

Another question, stock Rubicon tires, do they fit under a KJ? (are they the Moab's that I hear every one talk about?) I read about the Rubicon rims, they have to be 03 or earlier.

stock rubicon ( aka moab's ) are 245/75/r16 mt/r's.

believe someone put these on an unlifted libby and did get some rubbing.
they are just under 31" diameter ...

Rubicon wheels have to be 2006 or earlier not 03 or earlier

We have a LOST member from Australia running 265/70R17 Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ Radials. His custom lift seems to give him a lot of room for flex despite the tires being 31.9x10.8". Mickey Thompson makes quite a few tires for 17" rims that fit the Lib with a 2.5" lift. The MTZs are supposed to be a great offroad tire and the MTXs are a good all-season all-terrain that I've personally seen do just fine offroad, comparable to BFG A/T KOs.
Cooper also makes quite a few Discovery series tires in lifted Liberty sizes for 17" rims. I've read a lot of reviews on their Discovery ST all-terrain tires and STT mud-terrain tires, and the clear majority are positive.

I'm just trying to show you some options you could have staying with 17" rims.

They are pricey but MT also offers the ATZ Radial in a 245/70/17.
