| Post subject: | question on my new bfgs? |
As some know i just swapped out my stock tires for bfg A/Ts in stock size 225/75/R16 well got it back from the shop and all was fine till about 45 to 55mph and then i got really rough. so i took it back and demanded a rebalance so they did so and it still is kinda bumpy/shaky not as bad but like i can see my xm reciever movin back and forth. the guy said drive it for awhile and see how that is. also the pressure in all 4 is 39psi so is this kinda normal for this tire?bein as though when i placed the order for them on tire rack it there was a caution about the ride quality or something. i really dont know what to do i mena if thats how they are then i can live with it my wife dont seem to mind but im just not sure if it is right or not. thanks for any input |

actually it said this when i ordered them, * The following tires you have selected have a higher load rating than the vehicle's Original Equipment (O.E.) tires. This typically results in increased ride harshness, which some customers may find undesirable*. |

the more psi the harder the ride, try dropping down alittle & see what happens I have those in a 245/70 load range E & they ride plush at 35psi but I generaly run them at 37-39 psi for mileage perposes but they still ride somewhat plush but you can feel a little harshness, not much though & they wear perfect |

my bfg's were a bit rough too, load rating E. They did last a long time though, 62k miles. I didn't realize how harsh the ride was until I replaced them with load range c tires. world of difference, half the road noise. |

Look on the white letter sidewall and see if there is a small dot of blue or pink paint. Some BFG's used these as index marks. The guy mounting them should have put this dot at the same point the valve stem is. Not sure why it works, but all of the old guys in he shop do it and the take less weight in balancing. Travis |

BFG AT's take a lotta weight when balancing. it's the nature of the beast....and don't lock up your brakes, you'll trash em. Keep drivin with em for a while, it WILL get better, and get em rebalanced in a couple thousand miles. BTW-keep em at around 40 psi. |

to much air psi run them at ~32 psi or do the chalk test and see you may get away with less our MTR's ride fine with 32 in them ,they are noisy but rid quality is fine the BFG AT is not a very agressive tire so it should ride good but you will still get some noise you are not mistaken tread noise for bad ride? the MTR's will shake the mirror at ~30-40 mph but get quiet at 60 |

It may just be the tires... but Does it feel like it is shaking from just one end/side/corner of the vehicle, or is it all around? If it feels like it is just one area the shake is coming from try swapping the front tires with the back and see if the shake moves. Its probably one of the things already mentione, but its not impossible to get a bad tire from the factory. Did you get an alignment? |

Let the tires tell you what psi they need. Do the chalk test on the tread. Only takes a few minutes and you get a psi for both the front and back to go back to. |

Definitely play with the pressure. I ran them on my old Scout II (33 x 10.50 x 15) and they were happiest at 30 on the front and about 25 out back. The chalk test will help. |

If you do the chalk test, make sure you're loaded to what you normally drive around with. With an empty KJ I get about 26-27 lbs. It rides like a Cadillac, gets full patch contact but is a little soft on turns. If you carry a lot of junk adjust pressure accordingly. As a side note, if you run pressures in excess of 40 lbs (unless loaded heavily), you will notice the tires are very quiet until the centre tread wears out and then you'll wish you had ear plugs cause it's going to get load. |

FYI chalk test - draw a line across the tire with chalk - drive about 100ft or so - look at chalk line - if it's gone in the center - the pressure's too high, if it's gone on the edges - pressure's too low. Adjust pressure and repeat until the line disappears all at once. Note if outside or inside edges disappear first - get wheels aligned. |

Or after you have driven awhile... |

I've always tried cold - because recommended inflation pressures are cold. |

well there still kinda rough in my opinion and 1 place said you will mess up the tires tryin to rebalnce them over and over so im about to just save those for the trails so what would be another decent all around tire for dry rain snow etc that shouldnt be hell to balance? maybe the duelers? when i add those to the cart it doesnt come up with the load warning like the bfgs did. |

With out being able to ride or drive it I can not say for sure why or if they are riding ruff for any AT tire I know this first hand tires can be bad from the factory higher load range tires ride ruff compaired to lower load range tires E is the worst C is the best 16" rims will most times mean higher load range D or E Bridgestone Duler AT revo's are loud compaired to a "highway tread" I have them on my work truck 265/75 16 E at 70 psi rear and 50 front on an '02 F250 weighing every day 8500# or more they ride good but make more noise You can not and will not ever damage a tire balancing it all they do is spin the tire on a machine that looks to see at what point the tire moves and it figures out how much weight is needed for the inside and out to make it ride nice I have had more than a few tires cause a bad ride and found out that a few of the belts broke with in the tire causeing it to pull under load it would check good on the blance machine but if you looked at it real close when it was spining you could see it move at some point on the tire You need to look and make sure that you have balance weights on both the inside and out side of evry tire if not this is your problem if you feel that it is every bump in the road that you feel then an AT tire is not for you and a good highway tread is in order how ever if you are running a LR D or E tire and have not run it on the road for a while at pressures from 28-40 PSI to find the sweet spot then realy you have nothing to compair to I would lower them down to 30 psi take ride if it rides good check with chalk if it looks good then leave it alone |
