Post subject:  some different tire choices
So I called a local tire place to see if they have Grabbers or if they have to order. The guy said they would have to order, but gave me a couple other choices. I'm having a bit of trouble finding these online and thought I'd call on the experts for some help.

He suggested:
Cooper Prospector AT
Sport King AT (found these online, wanted to get some opinions here)
Dayton Timberline AT (already have these, wanted more aggressive)

I dont want MTRs or Mud tires, because the Jeep is my DD and I dont have the space to store another set to swap them out, so dont even think about telling me to get Mudders!! :wink:

Both can be found on the Cooper site by going to "Associate Brands". Your best bet will probably be in the Light Truck section of either site.

I don't see anything on the Cooper site called a Prospector.

those Dean Mud Terrains actually look pretty good. They seem like they would be ok for daily driving, unlike MT/R. And they are m+s, so hopefully they wouldnt be so bad in slick situations like MT/R.

anyone have experience with these?

I know that you say NO MT's but have you ever had any? how bad were they realy?
we run MTR's on the KJ not to bad to me and the wife
we run Super Swamper LTB's ,bias ply HUGE luged tire, and to be honest I find them to be liveable
I would not want to use them on a DD but for what we do in this rig they are fine
the wife uses the KJ as a DD and makes sales call with no issues

i have not had MTs. But, I've heard a lot of people complain about the loss in fuel economy. What I'm really concerned about is I've heard some things about (this may just be MT/Rs not all MTs) them being really bad on wet pavement and snow. I live in the snow belt so this is a serious concern for me. Like I said, these we specific complaints about the MT/Rs, so maybe I'm off base here. Please enlighten me, I'm very willing to learn and take suggestions! I was just saying no MTs based on previous advice.

Up till a few weeks ago I ran MT/R's since '01(only switched to Trxus MT's to test them out),I'm from SD so I saw alot of snow and ice and have had zero problems with running MT/R's,granted any aggressive tire will suck on ice the MT/R's did rather well compared to other MT tires even AT tires.Heavier---Yes but they are built better to take more abuse.It's a Jeep not a Honda so expecting good MPG's shouldn't be anywhere on your list.

The Sport Kings are made by BFGoodRich.

I've ran them on my trucks for years, they hold up well. Very good traction too.

Its basically a Goodrich without side biting lugs

I"m really not concerned about the MPGs. If that was a concern, I wouldnt be driving the Jeep in the first place! My main concern is with the ice and wet roads, but you say they arent that bad... so i guess I'll research some more.

well as far a MPG loss it will happen MORE with an MT than with an AT and less with a highway tire but it is not the tread or weight alone that causes the loss but the change in size that hurts the most
I can not say about snow and ice as I live in "the deep south" but rain I know
we had the OE tires replaced at <6K for free due to VERY poor wet traction and were told that
"you can have any tire goodyear makes that will fit your jeep at no charge"
we got the wrangler AT's and LOVED them GREAT highway ride Great wet traction for about 3.5 or so years now they still had some good tread but were starting to spin in the rain just like the stockers
after some research I found that the long wearing tread on the Goodyear tires gets hard or dry rots very fast
I ONLY put more Goodyears on due to the price
we now have 245/75 MTR's and MPG did go down
I do know that in the rain the are great but at 35-45 they are loud but for $50 a tire for new to nearly new tires I can live with noise
IF I had to do it again and HAD to pay retail for tires and knowing that it is for a jeep that may see 3-4 trails a year I would go BFG AT
Now I am a firm beliver in "You get what you pay for"
that being said if it were not a DD I would go with some cheepo MT's and be done with it but for a DD I would go with QUALITY over quantity every time
This is why I run LTB's on the TJ and Bridgestone AT revos on my F250 work truck
wich at 14K look great still even under 8500+# of truck

well, i think what i need to do is get some first hand experience of my own. since im totally sure what to do, i dont want to buy retail. so, i'm gonna buy some used MT/Rs and keep my current undersized ATs. So, if I end up hating the MT/Rs, I'm not out a whole boat load of cash and i'll still have my current tires. thanks for the help everyone.

I can get Firestone Destination A/Ts locally in size P235/75R16 mounted balanced and on the car for $100 each, which seeems pretty reasonable compared to tire rack. I narrowed it down to them or Nokian Vatiiva. I think the Vatiiva is probably better, but the nearest dealers are 25 and 27 miles away and I don't want to go with something that hard to find.

Firestone Destination ATs are good have a set of 245-70X16 with over 32000 on them and still almost half tread ( up for sale now :wink: ) they do a good all around job, I just went to a bigger size tire

Hey Jon, saw some of the Sport Kings yesterday and was thinking about getting them but the tire mounter told me that he had a set on his pickup for a while and they cupped real bad real quick, maybe just him but he has the Kumho KL78s now and no problems.
The Prospector line is the or like tires going to Walmart, cheaper line up, never heard good or bad about them.
I know what you are wanting a great off road tire that handles well on the street, no noise and lasts forever ...right! :wink: Oh and all that for 49.99 per tire!
I will tell you soon ( within the next couple of weeks) what my real thoughts on my "new tires" So far quiet and ride good!
