P235/70/16 OR LT225/75/16 any thoughts???

Ok, I thought I had my tire choice nailed down, finally decided on GY silent armours.

Now, I still have decisions, some first hand LOST advice would be GREAT :wink:

The size I want, stock 235/70/16, doesn't come in LT, 'cept in BFG AT, which I decided against, partly $$$.
My reason for LT is some offroading, gravel, and utility trailer hauling, not a lot, but some.
Any experience with LT225/75/16 load D ? Noticeably less on-road traction? dry, ice, wet traction?
Also, if anyone has pics of the skinnier tires on the KJ??? (no, I'm not vain at all)

I have Dunlop Rover AT's 235/70-16 . Dunlop is owned by Good Year they are a 60,000 mile tire I like them so far just waiting for a good snow to see how they are but I've heard good things from others about them I got them for $550.00
mounted and balanced with an alignment. Don't know if this helps or not. I had GY Fortura's before and was real disapponited last year in the snow with them. Good Luck

I own a 2004 and 2005 KJ. The 04 has the 235/70r16 Goodyear SRA's and the 05 has the 225/75 ST's. The 04 handles MUCH better than the 05 and absorbs bumps better. They also fill out the wheel well a little better.

Thanks kayadog, that's what I was wondering about. The guy I was talking to at the tire shop pretty much confirmed that the p-rated 235 would be adequate, load wise. If the handling improvement is that noticeable, it makes my decision easy!

The 235's may be better anyhow, but I wouldnt try to compare the ST's to any tire in any size. The wrangler ST's are just very flimsy.

I just went from 225/75R16 to 235/70R16 tires and the 235's are much better all the way around.

FWIW I also considered the BFG AT Lt. 235/70R16 AT (6ply) tire, but stayed with Goodyear all season tires.

I just got bank approval for new tires myself....I am going with the Hercules Terra Trac A/T's 235/75-16

Might check into that size yourself?

I ran LT225/75R16 MT/R's on my KJ for over 2 years("D" range),much better then the OEM "passenger car" tires that came with it.Had a better ride(more like what a Jeep is supposed to have),better traction on all surfaces,and no problems even in the slick stuff(snow/ice).

225/75's are only 10mm skinnier then the 235/70's,that's less then a 1/2",not noticeable at all.

In my opinion you'd be better off with the LT tires then "P" tires on a Jeep,my 2 cents though.

Here's an old post of mine from over 3 years ago. You will see both 225/75 MT's and 245/70 AT's on an 04 with no lift. Hope this helps.
