I still have about 5,000 miles before I need new tires but I’m looking into it now. I would like to get 245/70/16 (I like the Revo's and the BFG's.) I have a stock ’04 Limited. Acording to the charts they should fit without rubbing (correct?) Here’s the question:

Will normal road spray from rain stay inside the wheel wells or will the tire be outside of the wheel well in which case the car is going to be a mess any time it rains or I run through a puddle.

I’m fine with mud, it’ll get there with the 235’s I have now and probably even 225’s. I’m just wondering about normal driving when I want to keep the Jeep clean. I don't want to deal with spacers or anything like that. Oh, I can fit that size on my stock rims right?

you can run the 245-70X16 on the stock wheels and no they will not stick out any more than stock, you will not get any more road spray than normal also

wow, i thought i was anal about keeping my jeep clean! i'm guessing you slow down when crossing water/puddles on the road when it is otherwise dry, like i do?

Eh... kinda, but kinda not. They will stick out a little bit by nature since the width of the tread is greater and the centerline stays the same.
Tread width (which some manufacturers specify and some don't) matters, too, but ultimately, even going from 225 to 245 adds about 1 cm on the inside and one on the outside. put a yardstick flush against your fender over the wheel (at the point most likely to fling debris) and measure it to be sure.

but come on the difference between a 235 70 and a 245 70 is a frogs hair! maybe 2/10 of an inch so not even worth worrying about!

Sure, 5 mm doesn't make a darned bit of difference unless you're splitting "frog's hair"s. Of course, what do I know? I drive right through puddles because I enjoy the splash and haven't washed my KJ in over a month! :P

Oh man, was that a knock at me? Personally I like the look of my KJ with a little bit of dirt on it and when the wheels have that nice ring of dry mud around them. My shinning moment was back in ’00 with my ’90 Cherokee after I found a new dirt road that had been cut and compacted for a new development. After about 5” of rain the road was about 3” of mud and perfect for high speed drifting turns (hey, maybe I started the drifting movement back then!) I must have gone up and down that road 100 times and mastered the 55mph drift for a stretch of at least 100 yards before the road straightened out again and the only area we could see out of was the front and rear wiper, not even the sunroof. I was great!

Now days I’m not sure my wife would appreciate the same paint pattern (or use of the Jeep for that mater.) If have to worry about her dragging her pants/skirt on the door sill if we go out for a nice meal I don’t want my ear chewed off about why I bought wider tires. So that’s the main reason for asking.

In regards to cleaning the jeep, I try to have it washed (yes I pay for it b/c I don’t have a driveway) about once a month to keep the paint shinny and clean so we can get the most out of her when we do sell her.

All in all it sounds like I’ll be OK. However, I have another question I’m going to start a new thread about regarding the increase in tire width and weight and what if any decrease I will see in mpg.

Its actually a 10mm difference. a full half inch wider on each wheel...1 inch more rubber on the ground all the way around which is quite a bit when you think of it. ;)

but less than 1/4 inch on either side of the wheel, no matter what stuff is going to fly up

Yeah, but I went ahead and ass-umed that 5mm would go out the inside and 5 on the outside. The extra rubber in the inside probably just gets mud on the undercarriage and suspension parts.... :P

P.S. it's awesome that the board obfuscates the first syllable in "assumed".
P.P.S Can't you get your lady a pair of rain boots to wear when you go out somplace nice?

I love the 245/70s however they do not get any more mud on the sides of the Jeep under normal conditions. My AT2s do sling a bunch more mud off road so "repainting with earth tones" can be a little easier. dgeist, double word score for obfuscates. :D

Im probably 110% more anal about keeping my Jeep clean than anyone else on this board. I have the molded mudflaps which help keep things off the sides , but I didnt really notice a difference with the 245/70/16 tires even though they are mounted on rims that push them out 1/2in more than the stock rims.

A more aggressive tire will pick up more water and rocks though, so that alone may kick up more stuff.

mighty strong words! 8) we'll have to get together sometime and verify that.

I'm consider this same tire size. Unfortunately and fortunately I have an extended warranty and can't really throw a lift on the Jeep so I want to get the biggest tire I can fit. My pinch weld is still as it came orginally so does anyone using these experience any rubbing when fully locked to either side in any condition? (stuffed or not) They would be mounted on the stock rims.

Not even the slightest bit of rubbing on the sway bar? I've read on the forums that even 245/75r16s will rub slightly on the sway bar (I could have read this wrong). I'm assuming it is so much the tire width that's causing the tires to rub but the actual diameter. If that's the case I can't see too much of a problem between 225/75r16s (29.3) and 245/70r16s(29.5). I wonder why Jeep didn't have that as a tire option.

You're talking about somebody who pulled his rear suspension to paint it - and posted pictures to prove it. Top that if you can.
