what's the biggest tire that will fit on a Crager Soft 8 16x7? I am staying stock for now and want to go with the Chrome Soft 8's. Will 16x7 allow a bigger tire than a 16x8 with no rub or modifications or am I going to be in the same position because of BS differences? how does the rim size 7 or 8 affect the tire? does an 8 make the tire wider and shorter than a 7? I am so confused by all these numbers/combinations

I have 245/70r16 General Grabber AT's on 16x8 Cragar soft 8 with 5" Backspace. They fit in the front (clear the pinch weld by .00000001" and don't hit the flares) but in the back they rubbed the top middle of the rear flare pretty good. I solved that by trimming off the inside plactic lip at the top of the flare and folding back the sheet metal with a rubber mallet. They still rub a tiny bit but not enough to hurt anything.

I would be concerned that the 16x7 Crager's with 4" Backspace would push the tires further out and cause bad rubbing, but hopefully someone else will chime in with real world experience.

I am bummed that the tires rubbed, but the trimming was easy and can't be seen. The Jeep looks great and much much more agressive. The wider tire and less backspacing gave it a noticeably wider stance that looks cool and markedly improved handling.

The 8" rims definitely make the tire wider. I don't know about shorter though.

Also remember that all 245/70r16 tires are not the same width and height. They can vary as much as .5" which could affect if the rub or not. You need to look at the manufacturers specs.

You can run 265/75's on a 16x7 rim,heck my 265/75 Trxus MT's recommend a 16x7 rim.

That's definitely true but I think he's asking more about whether the different wheel offset/backspacing will result in rubbing by spacing the tires outside the wheel wheels.

exactly. I need to stay stock for now but need tires so I want to go as big as I can for now with no rubbing and no trimming/pounding. I may just go 235 or 245/70r16 on stock steels for now but wouldn't mind some Crager Soft 8's probably 16x7 if I can get the right tires to fit my no lift/no mod needs.

Every time I read a topic like this I get all confused
We all know that you can run a 245/75 with no almost no rubing with a minimal lift on the OE wheels
from what I read every one who has gone to an after market wheel with a 245/70 gets rubbing issues
yet that same tire fits fine with a stock wheel

I would just keep the stock wheels and put the 245/70 or what ever on them
This way you avoid the rubbing head ache

Just my .02

yeah, I think thats what I am going to do, or try and find a set of 16" factory alloys to replace the plain steels I have now.
