Painting rims

I'm thinking about painting my rims black, i really like how it looks, and powdercoating is too expensive for me right now. I searched the forums and found that on the army kj they used rustoleum hammered metal finish paint. Does anyone have any suggestions? If i do it, i would like to do it right.

Check you local paint stores for someone who sell Rustoleum Indutrial Epoxy. This product is made for painting Cement mixer trucks and dump trucks. One of their sales aids is they hand you a peice of sheet metal primed and painted with this product they then hand you a ball pien hammer and say pound on it from both sides. A lot of paints when the metal is impacted from the back side will pop off the surface. This product does not, it sticks. I even had the sale rep leave me some product and I made my own test panel just in case factory application made a difference, I worked like a charm. Now the most important thing with any paint job is surface prep. I suggest having the tires remove use a semi-paste paint and varnish remover and then wire brush scotch brite pad and or steel wool and try to clean them down to bare metal then use the reccomended primer and top coat allow plenty of drying time and proper temperature when applying. The longer you allow the paint to cure and harden the more bullet proof the finish will be. Save a little extra for touch up if needed after tires are mounted and balanced and I think you will be very pleased. I takes a lot of time effort sweat and patience, but you will have years of service and good looks for your wheels.

No problemo I was in the paint a spray equipment for over 35 years. They may even have some urethane epoxy I can't remember now. But a urethane has some flexibilty check with the vendor to make sure.

My moabs had that when I got them. I guess where ever Jason got them balanced they used those. I kinda like them since it keeps the lip clean. The tire place I used didnt have those but I asked them to put the weights on the inside lip which seems to be working out great. Only thing that made me mad was, they didnt take the old stick on weights off! Now if they ever fall off Ill have to get them rebalanced. :roll:

Rims look sweet BTW.

You have learned your lessons well Grass Hopper. I'm starting to consider doing the same thing only of coase I want to take it a step further. Paint the lower recessed portions of the Wheel Black maybe even same as yourm But a step furhter would be the Raised portion and outer sring and lip do in a Blood Red Metal Flake then a Clear Coat Epoxy for addtional protection.. I will be a while before I can approach this project , But you have inspired me.
