Maxxis Bighorns

So I finally got my 245/75/16 Maxxis Bighorns! Went to a local tire shop today to get them mounted on my rubicon wheels.... all sorts of fun. They mounted the first two with no trouble. I then spent the next two hours watching as they were unable to seal the beads on the last three. Just could not get the bead to fully pop.

It looks like there is an extra edge of sorts on the inside of the wheel that the tire is getting stuck on. Anyhow, I had to leave the Liberty with them for the afternoon. They're going to leave the tires out in the sun with the hopes it will soften the rubber enough so it can bead a bit easier.

Anyhow, the tires look great, just wanted to provide a "warning" of sorts to others who are thinking about running a similar setup. I'll post some pictures once I get the Jeep back *crosses fingers*

Were the tires stacked on top of each other or something? If they have a Blaster ( shoots about a 120/130 lb air blast into the tire and pops it up) they should be able to get them without too many problems. Theres no extra lip on the wheels, same as stock. Sidewalls would not be that much difference or stiffer than say an MTR??

They pulled out the blaster but I only saw them try it once. The funny thing is they installed two of them with no problem, no blaster needed. I bought the tires online from a tireshop, so one would hope they stored them upright, but you never know.

I think the rubber on the MT/Rs is a bit softer and more pliable than the Bighorns helps them bead a bit easier.

They should have a big webbing ratcheting belt to strap around the middle enough pull the center in, pushing the beads out. Am I showing some age here? That worked well, when it was used.

I think he's talking about actually getting the bead to seat, not inflating the tires...the Cheetah is the best invention ever though, for those dorks that want to run a 235/75-15 on a 15x10" wheel...ha

with problem-seating tires...best thing to do is roll it away from EVERYTHING, run a clip-on air chuck to it, and turn on the shop air and hope for the best from about 50 feet away :lol:

I would bring it to a different shop
I know that I tried to have an unnamed chain store mount my swampers and they could not get them balanced
"Sir there is some thing wrong with your tires because they all 4 call for 10-14oz of weight and we can not balance them"

"OK well I will just come pick them up if you can not do the job"

I get there and they had them mounted and a bill for $60 for mounting and balancing tires
I told them
"I am not paying you for work you could not do"
and I did not pay
some shops just do not know what they are doing

Just picked it up. The owner said they needed to used a rubber strap to pop the bead, something they haven't done in a looooooong time. Probably same thing as what your talking about InCommando.

I'm glad they figured out how to mount the new rubber, it looks good! How is the road noise with the bighorns?

I've seen enough shades of brown, Need to get up somewhere with some trees and snow. Anza a little later in the month though.

Road noise is not bad at all, I hear a slight hum but nothing out of the ordinary. The ride pretty well on the pavement, i'll have to report back on how they do off road, in the rain, etc.

I've got Maxxis Bighorns on my Z71. They've got nearly 10,000 miles on them and they still look brand new. They're not too loud for what they are and they ride really well on the stage. They handle really well on wet and dry pavement, as well as in the ice, for how aggressive they are. On top of everything, they just look mean!

Looking good mate, that's probably my next choice of mud tyre after the coopers are worn (but just a little wider :wink:

)

They look great & should hold up on the trail, as far as I know they have a good side wall so your OK there also.
