This summer I plan a long drive (450+ miles each way) on some unpaved roads in Canada and Alaska. These roads feature crushed shale which is particularly hard on sidewalls. I am looking at BFG AT/KOs as they have done well on my XJ on desert off road travel. Is this a good tire for my KJ for these kinds of roads? Lots of information about thread patters, belt materials and wear factors but not much info to compare sidewall differences. I think I need an AT tire, that all seasons ones would not hold up to sidewall abuse. Any suggestions?

There has been many posts around the net with concerns about the BFG A/T sidewall. It may have been an older version, but it is out there...

I don't know exactly where you are driving... (sounds like the north slope to me?)

I grew up in Fairbanks and made plenty of trips up north and FAAAR too many drives between Alberta and AK. Those roads really aren't as bad as people say. I have driven to Prudhoe several times and all over the place on BFG radial TA's (street tires) and never had a single flat. Between those tires and some Michelin XCLT4's that were on my expedition I never had any issues.... I would say the ATKO's would be more than adequate...

Up the Dempster to Inuvik...I understand the crushed shale in hard on sidewalls, some folks with VW vans made it but after several sidewall failures. And that kills the tire no inserting a, plug, tube or sealing gunk. Still the BFG AT/KOs seem pretty good to me, my XJ does fine in Death Valley with them.
