I was quoted $599.81 (before tax) for a set of 4 tires mounted, balanced, installed, old tire disposal as well as the “protection tire repair & replacement” which is the insurance. I’m not sure how long that coverage applies but if I get a flat or even rip the sidewall while wheeling (their words) I can just bring it in and they will repair OR replace for free. I’m sure that has a limit on the tread depth or age of the tire but I can’t remember what it was. The tires are 245/70/16 Firestone Destination A/T (with Uni-T.) The quote is from a Firestone shop/dealer in Long Island, NY. The tires were $130.99 each so $523.96 for 4 (about $30 more than Tirerack) Everything else was an additional $75.85 I think the tires at this place are expensive but their installation price is very good. Maybe I’ll see if they will install tires I buy on my own. What have most of you done when buying new tires? |

Just for comparison sake, most places around here get $25/tire to mount & balance a tire not purchased at their store. So, with shipping & the optional tire protection those P245/70/R16 Destination A/T's would run around $120/tire, or $480. If you pay the average of $25/tire for mount/balance, you get to $580 for a set of four. That excludes tire disposal and any applicable tax. This was using shipping to Ohio. You have to really check the numbers to see if the internet discount house are really a bargain. Then there is also the fact that you lose the personal touch when dealing with someone. I doubt that the interent houses are as good at resolving probelms the way a recent post described the resolution to a problem with Discount Tire after a face-to-face transaction. I have spent hours shopping online & in person trying to pick the best combo for me. I think I have woke up screaming tire prices in the middle of the night at least twice now.... |

or shipping 4 heavy-arse tires either...with those two additional costs factored in, its usually a wash or even more than buying locally. just a heads up...and in EVERY case, unless the tire is bought at the shop installing, you will have to pay extra for the road hazard as they won't cover another dealers tires under their plan. |

I never buy tires in any major city, I know some can not do that, but since I travel to a very rural area almost every other week, I buy tires there, they have lots better prices even though less competetion. My Destination ATs in 245 70x16 and most recently my 255 70 X16 Kumhos were both under 425 for 4 mounted , balanced, taxes etc. I also go in saying I have been to this place, checked prices on line, and they have this price, so see if you can beat it ! Also go at the end of the month, where they want to get month end bonus if in larger stores/ cities. |

If you go the tirerack.com route have them shipped to an installer with the price pledge install price. I went that route and had the tires installed and out the door in less than 30 hours! You also can buy the road hazard warranty from tirerack.com up to 2 weeks after buying them. |

I bought 5 tires off ebay late last year. They were a good deal that included shipping. Getting them mounted was the tricky part. The day I got them mounted it was raining and business was slow. They told me on a normal busy day I would have been out of luck; they wouldn't have wasted their time. Anyhow, they actually sold the tires I bought and the price they quoted me was $80 more than what I actually paid. So I basically saved $16 a tire. Moral of the story: Different places charge different amounts for mounting tires you didn't buy from them. Do your homework before buying online. |

Thanks everyone for the advice. I’ll shop around a bit and see what’s what. I’d rather support my local guy rather than the someone I don’t know, that’s just me though and honestly I’d spend an extra few bucks (not a lot, just a reasonable amount) to support the local gut. Like my using my local hardware store rather than Lowes or Homes Depot. |

I feel like you do. If my shopping shows a serious discount to go online, that is one thing. But for $15 or $20 bucks on a $600 purchase (3%)? I'd also drive a bit to get a deal from an independent shop over a national chain, too. |

every place around where i live (all that ive checked anyways) charges $10 pr tire to mount and ballance. this is not for tires bought there either. i have gotten 2 sets of tires in the last few months and had them put on at 2 different places and both charged me 10 pr tires and also desposed of the tires for me. i have 3 MTRs on the way right now to go along with the other 2 i just bought and it should only cost me 30 bucks to have them put on when they arive! |
