Would a 215 85 16 be too much for a CRD Liberty? There are 3 considerations: 1. width, it is narrower, though not by more than 10 silly little millimeters(0.4"). 2. it is taller, might rub (1.1" taller) 3. Would the gearing be too tall for such a large diameter? Would like a 215/80/16 but did not see anything I liked, thinking load range C. Ideas? Thoughts? Thanks, R |

It's been done - it's titled 235/85 - however if you scroll down he went with 215/85 - however he's running the max pressure on the sidewall - which I think is dangerous - it minimizes your tire contact patch - however he stopped arguing and ignored us and seems to be happily running at 80psi. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=25163&highlight=215 |

Does the tire make sense? The thread seemed more about the danger of over pressure that the suitability of the tire. I want to do a lot of miles, tow and am concerned about the tire being too tall. Some manufacturers make a 215 80 16 but the 215 85 16 is more common. Looking for a C load rather than D or E. Maybe I should just stay stock and not worry about speedometer, gearing issues. R |

It depends on what you're looking for - personally I don't like going with skinner tires than I started with (225) - but then I've also got a lift and I'm running 245/75/16's - I wanted the ground clearance for trails and I'm really thinking about 235/85's but I'm not sure how much fender liner I need to rip out. but that fits my driving style. the 215's should have lower rolling resistance - therefore better mileage - if you keep your tire pressure ~40-45 range you'll have the same contact patch - it'll just be long and skinner vs short and fat. it sounds like they fit stock. Darby tried 235/75/16 - also a little taller than stock and they fit. load range E seems a lot more common - they run them on dually pickups around here. (FYI - the speedometer is almost dead on with the 245/75 - it was off stock - however the odometer reads low) |

Why not a 225/75 or a 235/70? what tires appeal to you in 215/85-16? |

I'm running 215/85-16s. They didn't rub with no lift. I wanted a taller tire, but I don't like the look of wide tires, and didn't want to lose highway mpg, so I went with the pizza cutters. Mine are load range D. I only run them at about 42psi because the TPMS complains at 44. |

CATCRD, What brand? How many miles do you have on them? Are you happy with the handling, stability, towing gearing and fuel mileage? The TPMS complains at 44 lbs? Can't that thing be turned off? I saw one brand, which I spaced out, that had a 215 80 16 but I think it was load range E. R |

They are some house brand I bought off craigslist. A guy was taking them off his RV almost brand new, because he really needed load range E. They are called Summit, Trail Climber. Got six of them for $240. I hear the TPMS can be reprogrammed to have different limits, but I try to stay away from the stealership at all times. As far as gearing, it's like going from 3.73 to 3.55. With the torque of the diesel and the ECU flash on top of that, I didn't notice the difference. I haven't towed with this setup yet, and I can still get just over 30mpg on level ground at about 70mph, after I adjust for diameter difference. I never had the speedo/odo corrected by the dealer either. |
