taller? 75 series tires are taller than a 70, cant find it right now, but for example
a 245 70 is 29.6
and a 245 75 is 30.5,
235 70 is 29.1 so a 235 75 would be about 30.0 I would say
235 85 is 31.8 if that helps

not really sure, but I am worried about the possiabilty of have to regear.
plus, i don't feel like pounding down my pinch welds.

Man, it took you about 2 or 3 months to put that lift on and now you're not going to go with the bigger tires? Go with 245/75/16. They will fit nicely (from what I've read.) and pounding down the pinch welds won't be too bad.

If you really need it I just had a guy in Thornwood, NY re-weld a bike rack I just picked up. He does a lot of rock on custom low-rider cars and he could probably do your pinch welds while you wait.

My advice is do it right the first time and don’t regret it later. Com'on, you know you want to go bigger. As for the gearing, you'll just have to use 4L more often. :D

I'm running 245/75-16 10 plies and I'm just as happy with my Jeep's power as I was with 235/70s. I can still light them up on dry pavement, it still merges nicely...it's FINE. just go with a 245/75. don't be a wuss:)

I am not being a wuss. I know how I drive and how I wheel. I use my KJ as my D.D. and going to 245 tires will kill my gas mileage, more then it all ready is a killer.

I think I will be better off going with the 235/75 tire.

Breakdown on the Tire Numbers:

245 = section width of the tire in milimeters [you can convert to inches by dividing that by 25.4mm]
70 = height of the tire. Given in a percentage.. so 70 would mean 70% of 245mm or 171.5mm
R16 = obvioius but this is the rim diameter

So...

245 = 9.65" wide
70 = 6.75" sidewall (remember there's 2 halves)
R16 = 16"

So add it all up [16=(6.75x2)=29.5" Tall at 9.6" wide]

Manufacturing differences between brands will not produce these exact numbers. There will be some variation

On the "Tire Rack Specs" for BFG TA/KO
I see no listing for a 235/75/16!

225/75/16 = 29.3"
235/70/16 = 29.1"
245/70/16 = 29.5"
255/70/16 = 30.1"
245/75/16 = 30.7"

So, unless your present 225/75/16's BFG's are badly worn and need replaced, you are only going to gain .2" in dia. by going to a 245/70/16.

Have you considered at least a 255/70/16, which is only .8" larger in dia. and wider than your 225/75's. Otherwise a 235/70/16 is going to look awfull tiny in your wheelwell with that Frankinlift II on it.

I run 245/70s on an unlifted sport with zero rubbing and zero change in my mpg. You would be fine going with those if you want. they are only .6" taller than stock and a 1/2" wider than stock which I love!! I am consistenly getting 19-21 mpg even in the winter. I need to fill up right now and I have 3 gallons of gas left in the tank. that's when my light comes on. My trip OD is reading 300 miles and I can get another 60 from the reserve. making this fillup an even 20 miles per gallon +/- some tenths.

Jeep Dawg, if you can wait I think I’m getting new tires tomorrow. I’m getting a set of Firestone Destination A/T’s 245/70/16. It’s the max that will fit with the stock suspension and it’s a true AT tire compared to the stock wrangler. I have been using www.gassavers.org now for 11 fill ups to track my gas use and I’ve been able to avg 17.08 mpg per tank. It’s probably not enough to make a full conclusion but enough to get an idea.

After I get the tires I’ll let you know how much my mpg has changed to help your decision. Also try not to get a very heavy tire, look at the BFG’s compared to the Destinations and it’s a lot heavier, I think that extra weight will kill the mpgs the most. There are a few posts in this section about tire weight and how it effects your mpgs so check those out before you buy anything.

Ditto that!!!! The BFGs and Grabbers are 25 pounds more PER TIRE than my ATs which rock!!! that's an extra 125 pounds of tire on the car over my ATs...NOW compared to stockers, they are even heavier by alot of pounds. Find a good AT that's not busting the bank on weight like BFGs or Grabbers. Those things are simply gas guzzlers, although being good tires. If its a DD, you have lots of AT choices for much less weight.

I have seen alot of guys here having to pound down their pinchers to run 245/70

if I went with the 245/70 i may not need to touch the pinchers?

MAN I feel like I am being pulled in all sifferant directions.
If I do not need to touch my pinchers when running 245/70/16 I may go with them then.

I just confirmed, I should have them on and set by 3PM tomorrow so I'll let you know how they work out. From all the post I have read it seems like with the 245/70/16 tire size about 90% of the people have no rubbing and 10% have very little rubbing at full lock in the front wheels near the fog lights. The pinch welds don't become an issue until you're the next size up so you shouldn't have to worry about that area.

Also, I just realized you're already running BFG's. Find out what the weight is of that tire, I'm sure even in a size (or two) larger you'll be able to find a tire that is about the same weight, you may end up almost the same in terms of mpgs if you can lower the weight some and go up a size.

I will be looking for your post tomorrow scooby.
Try to get a picture for me.

Yea my BFG's are pretty heavy. I was looking at the Gerneral Grabbers AT2 tire.
That is alot lighter then my current BFg's. Either my GPM will stay the same of like you said go up a little bit.

Your current BFG TA/KO 225/75/16 is a D-load range, 8 ply tire with a 3 ply sidewall, which is heavier, and far superior to a lightweight 4 ply passenger tire with a 2 ply sidewall for off-roading.

Being from the true muscle car days 70 series tires were the norm, In fact back then Pontiac had a sales pitch of Wide tracking. So as much as I hear about using slimmer tires, I was raised with the desire of wider is better. No granted I realise that through out the years Camero's and Firebird's with super fat tires, became a total road hazard when the first snow drop fell. But despite that knowledge, I still enjoy the appeal of wide foot print no matter what logic dictates to me wide tires are cool.
