kinda a 4x4 topic but a tire topic too

I don't think I have ever had a good experience driving in the snow yet in this jeep. I have driven with the stock tires and no lift, my daystar lift with a generic mud and snow tire and BF AT KO's never have I felt good driving the jeep in the snow. this isnt my 1st 4x4 I had a xj for a year as my 1st car and a dodge dakoda for 2 or 3 winters and the dakoda and the same brand mud and snow tires on it same size too that truck made me feel like i could go anywhere in the deepest snow.
Is this bad tires or is the liberty not the greatest in the snow? this is the 1st 4x4 i have ever had that just wont go in 2wd in the snow and yesterday 4wd was a tuff go in only a little snow (2inches)

I have never had a problem going in snow with the KJ, never even lock it in until it gets pretty deep and then have went through snow that was coming back over the hood. Depends a lot on tires and knowing how to handle snow.

I have the stock sr-a's and they are pretty terrible IMO, but as far as the libby goes it's the most snow capable vehicle I'VE been in, and I keep it in 2wd until I absolutely need 4wd.

I think it's mostly a matter of learning how to handle the conditions, and knowing what to expect. (i.e. this is my first RWD vehicle.) Keep in mind also that ice is ice, and 4wd is pretty useless if all four wheels are spinning.

See my sig for stuff.I have run in 2+ feet of snow on and off road without any real problems.Pulled a rollback up my old driveway once.He was so amazed he gave me $100 and wouldn't let me refuse it.Said it would have cost him more grief with the other drivers had he needed to call the shop.All in all my Jeep just kicks booty.Yours should too.

Ok guys I know how to drive in the snow and ice. The Jeep is just trying to drive for me and im the one behind the wheel.
Its that gosh darn ESP d*mn thing wants to use the brakes and Im trying to F-ing drive and now its in all jeeps thats just wrong.

Colts KJ, it sounds like you’re a little too heavy on the pedal. I have ESP and have had no problems. I’ve been in 4” of snow with the stock tires and still didn’t need 4 wheel drive. If you lay off the accelerator, then there should be no problems. ESP doesn’t kick in unless you are getting a little too squirrelly. We had a sheet of ice yesterday and this morning and I still didn’t need 4 wheel drive. Honestly, I think the KJ rides better and handles better on snow/ice than my TJ Wrangler did. The extra weight of the KJ provides the extra traction.

I'm 20 there is no laying off the accelerator! Its a jeep it is made to have fun in I want to hit it and go down the road in front of my friend sideways. I know it juvenile but I'm 20 and want to play when I get snow. In the pic of your rig section you can see this i'm doing donuts in an apple orchard. I'm not really saying I didn't make it where i was going I just couldn't have as much fun as I could of if i didn't have ESP.

But yea heavy on the pedal is an understatement I'm 3pts away from losing my licence and think I'm a criminal justice student and want to be a Kansas Highway Patrol Man. :lol:

sure does as with the traction control you are fighting it all the time, no wonder you are having problems in going as you want. Highway patrolman ??????OK :roll:

If you have problems in the snow with BFG AT's...there is never going to be a good snow tire on your KJ.

Ok so they are bald now I took them from a friend Im pretty poor these days :oops:

. Im getting STT soon. Im job hunting now tho so hopefully soon.

Yea I know some stories of Officer's past but I just don't want to grow up until I absolutely have to!!!! ( the power ball and never would be great)

Wouldn't a true winter tire improve performance (especially stopping) over any A/T? I was planning on getting a set of Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3's next fall. From personal reviews I've read on tirerack, people act like they drive the same on ice and snow as their old tires did on pavement.

I do see that most seem to favor A/T's in general, but I'm wondering if that is because they care about offroad more than actual snow handling. Right now my KJ is a daily driver / snow hunter and it does pretty well on my new Cooper Discoverer CTS's. It actually stops on packed snow alot faster than I thought it would.

I think you answered your own question. A/T’s are for all terrain (mainly for highway and off-road use) and winter tires are designed more for snow/ice than anything else. If you are looking for snow/ice, then stick with a good winter snow tire. If you want to take your daily driver KJ off-road (dirt, mud, rocks) then you probably want a good A/T tire.

I'm actually planning on getting 3 sets of tires myself. Winters are the next to buy in the fall, and some A/T's asap after.

Wife is ready to kill me already. I've had the KJ for 2 weeks and already have spent $1300 on the Am Ex getting it to a point I can trust it.

Have any of you guys ran blizzaks or whatever before on any of your vehicles? I've been seriously considering putting a set on my gf's eclipse and putting the pirellis on her moms car. That is.. if I can find a shop that will take the pirellis off so i can clean them out to see if it's even worth it. She put 3 cans of fix-a-flat in one of them a few weeks ago. I'm honestly supprised the tire hasn't exploded :lol:

I haven't been up there to drive it but once the snow is gone I'm sure that tire is going to ride like it's square.
