LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Think I'll need to trim some......

I hate to be a party pooper, but those tires suck off road. You should have gone with some Iroks, BFG Krawlers, Pro Comp Extreme MT (especially because pro comp does buy 3 get one free pretty often), or even the same Trxus in the 35. All of those are substantially better off road tires. As far as on road goes, I know 3 or 4 guys who bought them when they were extremely popular and the most miles any of those guys got was just over 20,000. At least with any of those other tires I listed they are great off road and are worth the lower on road performance for the gain off road. If I was doing an SFA I'd get some rubber worth while. Those Toyos are more show than go and belong in a show room and not off road. They are stiff which can be a positive at low psi, but if you plan on running anything besides hard pack dirt I'd run a different set. Just my 2 cents. :roll:

Na, you don't need no stinkin' trimming. Just lift it until nothing comes into contact anymore. That's what Brian Boitano would do.

Oversized tires are like jeans that are too long. You don't trim them, you just walk off the excess length, and in the case of tires, you just let the rubbing do the trimming for ya.

Actually the Toyo rated higher for offroading then almost all others,many prefer them over MT/R's and even the Krawlers(blue label not the red label).Yes they are soft and I'll only get 20,000miles out of them but that's the price you pay for good tires that preform very good in the type of terrian I wheel in.I have nothing agaist Irok's,just don't want to run 36" tires,yet,and I like the Trxus but not for the rocks and and low psi(there are way better then the Trxus on the rocks).You couldn't pay me to run BFG or procrap tires,there the worst tires you could ever buy(more so reffering to procrap,that's why they are giving them out for free,they suck).On road performance is a non issue with me as is tire wear(for the most part),as long as they kick stupid on the rocks I'll be happy and from many who run them they kick stupid on the rocks.Now if I could justify the the extreme fast wearing(will be shot after about 3000-5000 miles) I would have gotten the Maxxis Creepy Crawler comp tires,oh and try finding 5 35x12.50R15 MT/R's,next to impossible. The only tires I would run as of now..... Toyo Open Country MT's Goodyear MT/R's Maxxis Creepy Crawler Interco Bogger/TSL(bais ply only) Nitto Mud Grappler

I agree the Maxxis are amazing but come at an insane price. At my local 4x4 shop pretty much everyone refuses to run the Toyos because they suck on rocks and here at least, that is the majority of the terrain. They are not rock crawling tires. The pro comp are actually a really good tire and the BFG Krawlers are even more amazing. How professional guys out there do you see running the Toyos in rock Crawling comps?? I don't believe I have seen but a few maybe. That doesn't mean they aren't out there but how many do you see running Swampers, Maxxis and the BFGs? It is like a million to one. All those guys must be wrong. I don't think so. Now if you got a good deal on them, maybe I could see buying them, but they are generally WAY over priced compared to Swampers too. I am not sure you could pay me to put those on my rig though... well I guess if it was enough to buy a set of Iroks. What off road rating system are you going off of anyway?

Though personally the only thing I would buy with a ProComp label would be their tires, I still would shy away from those as well, since I have had experience myself, and heard others stories on that company. There just are too many other choices out there. Now to the debate... Though the Procomp doesn't score bad, ever other tire reviewed by Offroad.com except the Wrangler MT/R scores better. The Toyo was one of the Top scores in all categories including rock... Funny this should be talked about, cause I've seen WAY too many Toyo M/Ts on what I would call 'show' vehicles, rich people/kids who have big @$$ trucks, jeeps, etc, but all local here in Denver metro of course. I say 'show' because these vehicles don't go offroad much, from what I can tell. A couple months ago I called one of these kids out to play offroad in his brand new JK lifted moderately but still fitting 33 by something Toyo M/Ts. He completely changed my perception of the tire, going from show/rich person tire, to badass offroad but normally on a rich person's rig tire. He said they don't handle so hot onroad but they looked cool and that was his deciding factor in purchasing the tires (even though daddy payed that stinky poo). He was pleased that they kicked booty offroad, he aired them down to 18 on my recommendation and hardly spun a tire with open diffs. Troy, are you rich? I just didn't pick it up from you, no offense...but I did grab that $1000 bill you left underneath my KJ last time I was at Marty's BFG has had the offroad competition world's balls in a vice since the Baja 1000s been running, so it doesn't matter what's better you're going to see BFG everywhere. Everyone knows ProComp is ProCrap, honestly, spend some time on google and you'll find people who talk about tire seperation while driving on their ProComps. ProComp is the the real Firestone scare.

Many do,but that's a mute point anyway since they all use competion specific rated tires only,ones that are generally not available to the general public from being so soft they can't get a DOT approval,there DOT approved counterparts rather suck in general compared to the ultra gooey comp versions. But you cares,I got trusted sources that say they are good,better them BFG's and MT/R's,I'll run what ever I want and like I said my #1 choice is next to impossible to get right now due to most of the goodyear tires going to Iraq and Afganistan.

I guess the guys that run pro comps and almost every swamper, who run the rubicon and fordyce around here have no idea what they are talking about then. Yes, you can run crap if you want. It is your choice and regardless of what you say they are not rock crawling tires. They are an off road tire but not a rock crawler. Yes I know that most of the swampers are mud tires and not rock specific, but they still out preform the toyos on their worst day. I just think there are way too many tires out there that blow Toyo out of the water. If I was puting the money it costs into an SFA KJ I'd put some killer rubber under there and not some show tires. I was honestly disappointed to see those were the tires you were going with. I was looking forward to your build up, but it will be hard to get past those crappy tires. Maybe the kj will look good, but is that all you're going for? Bottom line: You listen to your "trusted sources" and I'll do likewise I guess.
