I'm getting tires in the next 2 weeks... finally. I'm going with bfg at's and from what you all say, I CAN get 245/70/16 with stock suspension of a 02 pre lowered liberty. Going that size, means I need 5 tires, not 4, and will end up sending a good extra bit of cash. I hear from some that I will have a noticeable loss of power, and MPG, and others say I won't. I want to know what I will gain, other than looks... |

tire size difference is not noticeable....if your going to lift the jeep later i would wait to buy nice tires later that fit the jeep...if not, go with the tire size...it looks better and it rides better too... |

Enough said LOL! Ide love to lift later, and get bigger tires later, but I won't be lifting this year by the looks of things, and I deffinitly can't last much longer on the tires I have, let alone winter... So new tires is the only way, if I go big or not... that's a different story... |

You could get some TreadWright 225/75R16 tires until you get your lift. Slightly larger than stock, $65 each. TreadWright |

The real loss in power and MPG will come from the additional weight that the "larger" tires have. I quote larger beucase this really should read heavier. What tires do you have now? Find the weights of those and then go shopping. I have the stock sized tires on an unlifted Liberty and have been very pleased. I don't or wouldn't need anything more in terms of size and if I did, I would buy a set of off-roading tires / rims that were more aggressive than my street tires. Everyone like the BFG A/T's but there are other tires out there... do some research to make sure you get the tire that best suits your needs. |

Your about 25% right,the main power loss from adding bigger tires is you change your final drive ratio(raising it) and are now out of the effective powerband of the engine.Regearing will bring you almost back to stock,then that's where the tires being heavier comes into play.

from stock to 245/70 you will not loose much from stock to 245/75 MTR we only lost about 2 mpg highway and 3 or so city your losses will look about like this taller tires cost you about 75% of your MPG loss more rolling resistance cost you about 10% weight cost you about 10% and wind resistance cost you about 5% ,yes tires have wind resistance and on an SUV that sits high it counts looking at it getting a skinny lighter tire will save you some MPG getting a short fat tire will save you more MPG's no matter what you do you are going to loose MPG's but remember YOU DRIVE A JEEP AND THEY ARE NOT KNOWN FOR GOOD MPG'S now bigger tires and what they give you varies and depending on who you ask you will get different answers I say that if you go with some thing with an OD of ~30-31" and a tread width of 8-9" and an MT that is about as good as you can do on a KJ that is lifted with out lots of cutting and moving now if you get a tire with an OD of 30.5" or a 245/75 R16 and compare it to a 33X12.5 R15 of the same model then most times the difference is 2" the reason being is that most 33's are not 33" tall but only 32.5" tall now you only gain 1/2 of what you add in tire so a 33 will only give 1" more ground clearance over a 245/75 and the #2 reason for bigger tires is ground clearance and hell I have never said "if I only had 1 more inch" well almost never oh and the #1 reason for bigger tires is better traction |

Also, keep in mind what type of driving you will be doing. If it is mostly on-road. The BFG A/T's are great. I have three vehicles now, so my Jeep has become mostly an off road vehicle. I absolutely have to get some mud tires. Last weekend we were at Uwharrie with Beforedawn and both of our vehicles were similarly equiped, but he was sitting on Mickey Thompson Mud Tires and I was on bfg A/T's. There was a noticeable difference when we were rock crawling. I will be getting a set of soft-8's and Mud Tires and they will probably be on the Jeep 90% of the time... Rescu2000 |
