Post subject:  Another winter tire question

I think I'm going to opt for winter tires for my 2008 Liberty. At first I was thinking of replacing the Goodyear Wrangler HP's on it now (which I hate) with a good all-weather tire, but I think I'm going to drive those tires out till I have to replace them and use winter tires during the winter season. My question...
Is there a decent winter tire out there that wouldn't be over $100 per tire out the door??? My tire size is 235/65/17. Thought some of you might have a good idea what's out there for a lady to be driving on in the winter. Thanks for anyone's input on this!!!!

I have spent some of the afternoon researching Tire Rack, Discount Tire, etc. Have found some good ratings on the Firestone Destination A/T tire as an all-season tire to use. Maybe I might consider this one. Any thoughts on that tire???? Do any of you know of any place that might give me some $$$ on my Goodyears that only have 3200 miles on them???? Probably if I bought another Goodyear tire!!?? Don't want the hassle of trying to sell them myself.

I ran the Destination ATs for two years almost and they ran good, did great in Ohio winters, wore like everything , finally got tired of them and sold them so I could go bigger!

But are you wanting a winter only tire or just a good all around AT type tire?

Well, since I've been looking on the web I'm thinking maybe I might go with an A/T tire for all season. But I'm also looking at changing out to an 18" tire on my 2008 Liberty. Just wondering at the present time on changing to the 18"......don't like the gap look on my present 17". Looking for what some of you have gone to!!!! Thanks! Savvy lady here who wants her new Libby to look good!!!! I seem to be partial to the more rugged look of A/T tires, but also want something that's not too noisey at the same time. Want to change out my rims, but right now I'm concentrating on the tires!!!! And not sure if I should stick with 17's or go with 18's. I know the choices narrow as you go bigger........ Give me some input guys!!!!!!!

Have been doing some research on A/T tires. What do you all think of the Firestone Destination A/T or the Dunlop Rover A/T??????

I have the Destination A/T's on my Liberty. Got them because Tom had them and they had great reviews on TireRack.

#1) Buy a tire you can live with. If you buy an A/T it'll do great in rain, snow and light off road action. It will not grip the road like a summer tire though.

#2) If you aren't going off road - maybe look at the BF goodrich long trail or rugged trail tires. They will do just as well in bad weather but will provide a little mroe grippy-ness for on road action

#3) I love my Destination A/T's. They've been wearing great for over a year and a half and survived harsh winter and foul weather like no buddies business

Thanks....I'll take a look at those and see what I think :)

I've got the 17" rims as well and went with a 245/65/17 Fuzion XTi from Tirerack.com. quiet and hold the road like glue. 235's are $99/tire.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes.jsp?make=Fuzion&model=XTi

EDIT: another thread about your tires? Girl, you need to make a decision! 8)

Post subject:  Read my snow tire posts...

I got the following tires for the KJ (we ran a fleet of them)

Michelin Latittude Artic Ice (rated no 1 by consumers reports)
Michelin X Ice
Toyo Open country Winter
Yokahama Geolander Ice
Goodyear Fortera HL all season
Goodyear Fortera Triple Tread (snowflake DOT rated) all season
Goodyear ST crap OEM
Goodyear RSA/GSA crap OEM

From my experience, I would go with the best rated tires per CS since $$$ is not the issue but safety.... there are only a few sq inches of contact with your tires and the driving surface... don't cheap out and get rid of the stockers.

If you think all season tires will cut it in winter, watch this excellent story on Canada's CBC Marketplace on Rental Cars w/ all Seasons only. All Seasons lose grip as they harden at temps from 5-7 degrees Celsius so a softer
rubber snow is better.

I heard Quebec just legislated snows for all vehicles in winter this year including rental vehicles.

4x4 are only good to get you to start moving only if you have good traction ie. stuck in the snow but can't help you stop faster than a RWD or FWD carr nor give you any better control.

http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/get_a_grip/

For the ave price of $650, get some snows.

Ask me how I know...

This right here is a very good tire as well. I run these (car version) on the wifes car and they rock.

[live in Michigan so we see moderate winters and plenty of rain]

I just have to put my usual plug in for the General Grabber AT2s. Its my opinion that they do very well in snow, not good on ice, but what tire really is. The aggressive pattern chews right through the snow and adds traction for fun summer offroading as well. :D

I don't do snow - it's not an issue here - but reading posts - the Nokian's have been highly praised
if I were in snow country - I'd try them.

Thanks so much everyone for some really good information. I'll let you all know what I do get soon. It's really helpful to me since I don't too much about good tires available out there. And I hate to walk into a tire store and they see a woman alone wanting to buy some tires.....most of them would try to sell me anything thinking I didn't know what I wanted. Now I have some ideas to go with!!!

Yes, CS rated the Assurance Tripletread the best all season tire on the most recent tire review thus the same reason we went to these for the fleet vehicles

The local tire dealer would probably offer you some "discount" towards the new tires. But you'll have to ask them about it otherwise the tire sales man will try to avoid that topic.
