235/70 R16 Destination ATs

Post subject:  235/70 R16 Destination ATs
Since they don't make a 225/75 R16 Destination AT, I've been told that I should get the 235/70 R16. This will cause no issues on a non-lifted 2005, right? I seem to have a ton of trouble keeping tire facts straight, so please confirm or refute this idea - I'd like to be 100% correct with the information before I purchase the tires. This KJ will be used off-road in addition to daily driving, so I'd like to avoid any rubbing issues.

235-70-16 is a factory option, so no it will cuase no issues.

Tires are the same hieght just wider.

I run this tire (235/70/16) on my un-lifted 2002 without any problems. I've had them for almost 2 years now without any issues... Great tires.

awsome posting. I am looking to put my moabs back on my now non lifted KJ and use the same firestone dest AT's but a smaller size cuz the 425/75/16 fits on but will rub big time if I need to turn.


I guess I am gonna go with 235/70/16 firestone dest at's on moabs

The Moabs will be a really wide wheel for that size tire, can be done but really not advisable

I'm running 245/75/16's on Moabs on a prelowered '02
and I get just a little rub at full lock. It's almost burned off, though! :twisted:

Is it that the 235 is not wide enough for the moab rims?

the 245's will not fit I already tryed that.

Yes, the 235 doesn't want to bead up quite right on a 8" rim.
What probs are you having with the 245?
Most everyone here concurs that the 245/70/16 doesn't have any rub issues.

I have an 03 with sagging springs and the 245/75 only fits with the wheel straight. I can not turn at all.
Is the 245/70/16 that much differance?

Calculating theoretical tire sizes:

Remember your units! 25.4mm = 1inch

1: Width 235/25.4 = 9.252" or 9.650"
2: Aspect: 70% of 235 = 164.5/25.4 = 6.480" of sidewall or 70% of 245 = 171.5/25.4 = 6.752" of sidwall
3: Rim Size is self explanitary = 16"


So for the stock size all tires have a theoretical size of 9.25" width and [16+6.48+6.48] 28.96" diameter
Now for the plus size tire... You get 9.65" width and [16+6.752+6.752] 29.5" diameter

About 1/2" difference. The problem is in the tire tread depth and then the production tolerances that are used for mass producing tires. So that tiny little half inch differnce can grow to 1" or greater (sometimes.) This is what eats up all of the room in the wheel well area of the KJ. I personally, wouldn't go larger than that stock size tire [keeping the stock rim size] to ensure that you have proper clearance on an unlifted KJ.

Then again, this is just what I think.

I've had no rub issues at all running 245/70/16's on stock alloys.

They're by far the best tire I've ever used.

245-70s on a stock wheel will only rub at full lock, most times when backing up, so no real problem, just learn to not cut that far :wink:
With Moabs on it creates a new problem as it moves the arc that the wheel/tire combo travels in out towards the outer edge of the flare, which I would say may let it to contact the pinch weld ( maybe) and also the front of the flare. Nothing that can not be dealt with, again depends on if an AT/Mud with aggressive tread etc
