Post subject:  A/T or M/T Tires In Winter
Soon going to be hit with snow here. I was goign to purchase a new set of tires because my older RoughRider AT are wore out (Havn't drove my jeep in winter, shes a recent purchase :D).
I didn't want to go out and buy snow tires so I was jsut going to pick up a set of AT or MT tires. Or Should I go buy a set of winter ones & pick up AT or MT in the summer? Thanks

with the KJ
drove one month of snow with stock tires VERY BAD
bought Firestone Destination ATs rest of the winter was great and the next
went larger and tried Kumho KL78s they did great as well in the snow :wink:

you most def want an AT tire in the winter. or unless you have the BFG MT which are the best MT in the snow. some would say the GY MT/R, but i would go for the BFG. im goona try and make one of those "TOM" purchases and try to find some.

If you have the money I would definately go with a winter set and a summer set, probably get the best performance that way plus they would last a long time. If you can't afford that I think it again comes down to how you mostly use your KJ. If you off road a lot and a Mudtire is necessary or desired then go with that, if not ATs are good. I have heard that mud tires generally do not do as well on slippery roads but I have never owned them so I don't know for sure. I use General Grabber AT2s and they work great in snow and for off road trails. Just my opinion.

IMO if you can't drive a Jeep on MT's in the snow, you shouldn't be driving at all.

That being said...my KJ did fine last winter, and I expect it to do fine this winter too on MT/R's

Not sure where you are in Canada but Quebec just made winter rated tires mandatory from Oct 1- Apr 1 and most provinces will be going that way over the next couple years. So vs. buying both a winter set and summers and I would suggest looking at a winter rated A/T that has the snowflake symbol confirming it's winter rated. The Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armours are an awesome A/T but also have the winter rating.

Mud tires can be run, for years I ran 38 and 40 inch bias ply Gumbo Mudders all the time, but have to say a good AT radial is a lot better :wink:
