Just mounted a set of snow tires on older OEM steel wheels and two have a slow leak at the bead and rim edge contact points on 2 wheels. The wheels had rust along the rim edge and was buffed.

Can the wheels be salvaged?

The alloy wheel repair shop said they have no memory and cannot be heated up to original specs. Is it worth trying to hammer them at all?

Time for new rims.

I just had some aluminum rims from my firebird that were leaking at both bead and valve stem due to the alum corroding. My tire shop was able to use some bead seal compound, worked fine, no leaks. I've seen my brother in law use bearing grease to seal beads, they never leaked after that.

They make bead sealer and it works fine.

I went and put the snows on MOAB rims instead but you guys are right, there were 2 tires that were leaking. One was much slower than the other and the new shop said the wheels should have been buffed more and sealed w/ mystery compound (peanut butter??)

The first shop didn't do it properly I guess. The wheels are still good.

Anybody run Yokohama IT snows?
