Post subject:  Aluminum Wheel Breakage?

Has anyone ever broken or been with anyone when they broke an aluminum wheel? I know I broke one on my old TJ, but they were a weak design and weren't remotely made for off roading. So has anyone seen it happen and if you have, what was the person doing when it happened? Thanks.

I've personally broken about 10 or so alloy rims in the last 19 years, accidents, curbs, and trees have done them in pretty good till I got smart and use only steel rims now.I've even bent 2 alloy Alcoa rims I had on my F150 from towing a bit over rated weight. On the trail Wheeler Lake a rock buggy broke one of his Trail Ready alloy beadlock rims on a basketball sized rock.

"... a bit over rated weight ..."? How much is 'a bit'? Would that be something like double the rated weight?

I've bent plenty aluminum wheels in my Japanese vehicles driving around like I was an extra in F&F II..... Wait I actually was! I never hit anything, they just bent. I went to forged aluminum on my Celica and didn't have a problem but they were spendy yet sexy.

I'm interested in off road incidences, sorry, I should have mentioned that before. So other than that buggy breaking one on the trail, has anyone else?

About 11,000lbs over rated tow weight.

Probably 3-4 of those rims I broke where hitting trees/tree roots offroad.

That is more helpful. Were they forged or cast?

Cast, the ones I bent where forged.

What I figured. I am seriously considering a forged set.

If your going forged go with Alcoa or Weld rims, they seem to be the better ones, not cheap though.

Or if you want the ultimate strength alloy rims that were engineered for offroad use you might want to check these out.......

My next set of rims.

My next set of rims.

I was looking at Walker Evan beadlocks for $325, but can't find for sure if they are forged or what. Problem is I have a really hard time justifying the weight and performance gain at $300+ a wheel over a $50 per steelie.

Forged alloy rims are pretty heavy compared to cast, almost as heavy(if not heavier with beadlocks) then steel rims of the same size.

Yeah, I need to find weights on the forged stuff as well. I am looking at all things aluminum to see if it really is the way to go.

They are very nice but I can't justify the money for them. I guess if I was rolling in the dough like Don I might have them...............well probably not as I am a tight wad! My cheapo's (Eagle Alloys) have held up to tons of abuse for 3-1/2 years now and I got 4 of them for right at what 1 Walker Evans cost.

Exactly, I can't really justify them, as bad as I wish I could, I can't.

A local guy GAVE me a set of Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels, set of 4. I'll try them out I guess and see what happens. They feel like they weigh half what my steelies do. The wheels have a little trail rash, but not as much as my steelies do. He ran them on his YJ with 38s and he never had any issues with them except when he would air down to 6 psi. At that low he said that he'd pop a bead occasionally. I run at 12-15 so I should be fine.

The rims I run on my Rubi are just like the Mickey Classic II. Mine are 15x8 and I run 33's on them all the time at 6psi now. No issues with tire slippage or loosing beads. I will say after having them on the Jeep for 3-1/2 years they are looking a bit beat these days...............
