Post subject:  3 ply side walls on a LT Tire?

Anybody have a quick list of 3+ Ply side walls for off roading. Was hoping to find the perfect all round tire for Colorado and some light off roading. Hope to go around the White Rim Trail in Moab UT in October. Daughter will be driving the car so I want reasonable all weather handling (snow and ice).

Will consider sizes
LT225/75 16
LT235/70 16
LT245/70 16

Thought the Toyo open country AT was going to do it (Well rated by Consumer Reports), but the 10 Ply tire only has a 2 Ply side wall. AARRRGGG....

New to group. Thanks for all the wisdom published here!

Heard nothing but good stuff about the new GoodYear MT/R's with Kevlar, supposed to be a steller offroad tire with good on road manners.

I have the previous model MT/R (before kevlar) which I think is 10 ply. Most people shy away from this tire because it's only for the serious driving enthusiast. 8)

So it is a really cool tire (MT/R), but does not come in my wimpy size...

I was talking to a tire dealer and he said the "3 ply side wall is more of a marketing gimmick" He felt he sees same number of side wall failures from Heavy duty 2 ply side walls as 3 ply side walls.

He was suggesting a Toyo Open Country A/T as a reasonable alternative (2 ply side wall).

Consumer reports Rated the Toyo A/T LT fairly well. Figured the 10 ply tire might be reasonable all round tire.

Sooo many tires, soooo little time.

Appreciate all the feed back. After lots of sole searching, balancing expensive - do it all tires with off road flat / accident in snow conditions -- I decided to go with the BFGoodrich A/T KOs. Costco had a sale on them. I think it is about $660 out the door. They did not have them in stock, so they are ordered and expected to show up in about a week. Just in time for the family trip.

Appreciate everyone's comments.

Next -- a little father/daughter bonding through off roading. Gotta love it!!

Costco's road hazard does not include proration or free replacement of tires damaged beyond repair.

I appreciate the offer. I lead dual sport motorcycle rides, once a year to Moab. I know the White Rim Trail like the back of my hand. I really want to take my family around it for my 50th Birthday. Let them experience the Desert like I have experienced it. With luck, they will love it and appreciate this wonderful country we live in.

Next step.... Getting a camp site on the White Rim.

Well I have the 10 ply 225/75-16 BFGoodrich AT/KO tires mounted last night. I have very very low expectations for ride comfort and noise. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. Even with a 3 ply sidewall and 10 ply heavy duty tread, these things ride really nice. Got out on the highway at 70 MPH and the road noise is comparable to my all seasons on my Nissan Altima.

Total price out the door was $660. Looks like the perfect all round tire I was looking for. Look forward to see how they do in the snow.

Good deal ignoring the tire dealer, whose job it is to sell you his product at the greatest product margin, and Consumer Reports, who may know something about toaster cozies but probably has zero real world experience with an off-road tire.

Actually, to a great extent, this is true.

Whether or not a tire has 3 ply sidewalls, 2 ply sidewalls, or 37 ply sidewalls, it will fail when not treated properly. It will fail when not properly inflated and overloaded, etc.

If you have three thin blankets, and a cat jumps on top of you while you're asleep, will you feel it more or less than if you have two comforters on top of you?

How many plies does a Michelin XZL 395/85R20 have?

One.

Nuff said.

Actually

ThunderbirdJunkie likes those tires. A lot.

For street pounding 3/4 and 1 ton work trucks where treadwear and traction on pavement is paramount ;)

Just an update. I've got 5000 miles on my BF Goodrich TA/KOs and they were the perfect choice for an all round tire. Amazingly quiet on the highway. Actually ride very nice for a 10 ply tire. Wife took the Liberty on our first snow day and could not tell the roads were icy till we change cars.

We just got back from Moab and my daughter drove us around the White Rim Trail. I don't think she missed a single sharp rock. Tires held up very very well.

For excellent all round tires, I think they are hard to beat.

Did you air them down while off-roading?

X2

And I've heard the new (super all-terrain) Nitto Trail Grappler has both the Mud Grappler strength and aggressiveness (tread & sidewall), with a excellent all-terrain street tire ride.

I need tires (currently have BFG AT ko's), and although I have no complaints with the BFG's - and since I am lifting the KJ, I've elected to try the new Nitto's. Besides, white lettering is for muscle cars, not Jeeps.

I recently read in a 4X4 magazine that TOYO and NITTO (sister companies) have been ranked number #1 in tire quality for several years. Please post up some pics and on-road/off-road reports as soon as you make the tire swap.
