Post subject:  Report: 5 Mud Tires Tested
Peterson's 4Wheel & Off-Rod magazine tested 5 sets of mud tires. The test only was for mud and nothing else. Here are how they placed.

Rankings:

1. Interco Trxus Radial Mud-Terrain

2. Pro Comp Xtreme Mud-Terrain

3. Maxxis Bighorn

4. BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain

5. Goodyear Wrangler MT/R

Tire Size: 33x12.50
Gears used: 4.88
97 Jeep Wrangler w/5 speed & 1947 Willys Both with lockers

Both Jeeps had about the same size motor. Everything was setup to be equal.

Both Jeeps used all sets of tires in a mud pit at Hollister Hills SVRA in northern CA.

They measured how far they could go, ability to clean out mud at low speed and high speed and added traction from turning tires side to side.
Conditions: Fresh mud and clay mixture.

This is from a magazine I got in the mail. Yes there were pictures but you will have to get the mag to see them. :lol:

my brothers rubicon got outta some pretty nasty stuff and they grab real well on gravel

It is proof that Interco's are king when their LEAST aggressive mud tire when's the test, even over newer "high-tech" designs. :wink: Imagine if they had used a classic TSL or Bogger?

In Goodyear's defense, they never billed the MT/R as a mud tire, and the MT in MT/R does not stand for mud terrain. MT/R stands for Maximum Traction/Reinforced. It was designed as a superior all terrain tire that happens to perform much better in mud than conventional A/T tires. Goodyear's aim was rocks & trails like in Moab, not mud.

ORA did a test a while back and the MT/R came in 2nd behind the Super Swamper so go figure. You have to own the MT/R to understand that it brings the sexy.

I have personally run 3 of those 5 listed,the MT/R,Trxus MT,and the BFG MT.The MT/R and Trxus MT have both been run on my KJ and I'd say the Trxus MT had a slight edge in the mud over the MT/R but not by much,but the MT/R won hands down on the rocks over the Trxus.As far as the BFG MT's I've run before they totally suck in mud and have extremely weak sidewalls,you couldn't pay me to run BFG's again.As far as the Maxxis tires many of my buddies back home in SD love them for mud but I have never personally run them.

If I remember right they are planning on doing a test with the same setups but on trails and rocks. That would be very interesting.

Do Cooper and Firestone make M/Ts worth mentioning? I have thought of buying a set of Destination M/Ts and having them siped. I don't want to go more aggressive than All Terrain because my Jeep is my daily driver. I have read many places where a tire like the Revo will outperform a tire like BFG A/Ts AS A DAILY DRIVER. sorry for getting a little off track!
