:?:

I just got my jeep liberty a few months ago and I got a nice letter from the stealer's service dept. reminding me to come in for and oil change soon with a coupon for the service, but I did it myself weeks ago. in the nice letter they say I wil need new tires soon so that got me looking at what I had on now and looking at prices online. the size tire rack, Sam's Club, NTB and the door sticker say I should have 225.75.16 but I have 235.70.16 My tires are GoodYear Wrangler and look ok now, maybe more than half worn, so I thinking the first owner changed the tires once maybe or I have a different size cus mine is a CRD. Any how I should be ok untill state inspection in June and I am thinking I may want to get a lift in the future. So what size tire will work best for me now and still look ok after I lift. brand and other suggestions would help too. I will be mostly on road, would like good wet traction and be ok if I go off road a few times. Around $100 a tire I'm ok with but if there is something worth more I will try to get it.

Edit 10/19/2009

after this last weekend of constant rain and slipping around I knew it must be time soon. Then I took off the spare cover and seen what the tires used to be like biy I was not going to make in through winter. so I decided it was time to shop more seriously. better to by new tires than to try to save a few bucks for a while and then have to pay a $500 insurance deductable.

100 per tire
look at the Firestone Destination ATs in a 245-70-16
or
the Kumho KL78s are in that range as well

nice thanks

do I need to change the spare at the same time ? or does that not matter as much or is it something I can pick up at a later time.

and while we are talking about the stare is there any way to fix it so when you hitch up a trailer its not in the way of lifting the latch and loering it on the ball?

I did some tire shoping today..

I found Sam's Club can sell me BF Goodrich Longtrail Tour for about $490 for 4 tyres mounted and all with 6 months same as cash. those are 60k tires. THing is they told me they would only mount a size that was speced for a car or an optional size so I might not get them to sell me the bigger 245/70/16.

GoodYear has Dunlop Rover AT $560 for 4 out the door. Or goodyear wrangler GS-A few dollars less after a rebate sale they have. both are 50k tires

I also went to Firestone and well they were much higher.

I am going to keep looking or order a pair next week from tire rack and anouther next month

If you have a way to carry the tires in to Sams they will mount them, plus 245-70s are only one size up from stock , many came with 235-70s ( mine did)
Walmart had mounted some for me for another KJ that were 4 sizes larger and they never said a word.
The Wrangler GS-As are only good for burning brush plies. not much better if any from the junk stock ones. They are doing away with these and trying to move them out quick

The BFG Long Trails is suppose to be a pretty good highway tire

Maybe Firestones have raised a lot but I got 4) 245-70s Destination ATs for about 90 each Mounted and all a tire of course this was 4 years ago

After looking Saturday and not finding a price and tire I thought I would be happy with I did some more looking online at other brands that I might find at local dealers. I was intrested in Hankook, Cooper and Hercules.
I liked that Cooper Discoverer ATR, and Hankook Dynapro ATm. I was curious about the Hercules Terra Trac AT cus the tread looked like the Dunlop Revo's the Firestone store had For $740 a set that I wanted but was not comforable with that price.

Today after work I decided to go to Buyer's Tires, a dealer in the small surban/Rural town I work in thats a few miles from Home. Right off when I told the guy what I had and wanted he recomended the Hercules Terra Trac AT or as a 2nd option since Cooper was offering a rebate on the Discoverer ATR. Then he said customers like the Hercules better and the warrany is about the same or better and both would be close after the cooper rebate. He quoted me $510 for all 4 with taxes mounting and tire disposal fees. So I went with it.

Tom you were right on with the size recomendation... they fit great no rubbing so far. The ride is good the jeep feels higher and looks good with them.

Mikey

Thanks for the great write up. I am about to replace my Goodyear STs and I couldn't make my mind up about the size.
After reading your posts I'm going with the 245/70s.

Jonathan

Hey Jonathan
your very welcome
I have had the tires all week now no rubbing. they are great too. I think the jeep looks better now and higher too. my stock 235/70/16 was a 29 inch diameter tire, the new ones are 30.5 yeah I know its not alot but I know the difference when getting in and out. I have to thank Tommud for sugesting the size to me.
