| Post subject: | Need 16" tire similar to 31x10.50x15 BFG Mud-Terrain |
I currently have 31" BFG Mud-Terrain's on my frankenlifted liberty. The previous owner installed 1" spacers in order to get the 15x8 wheels with 5.5" backspacing to fit. I love the look of these tires and they fit perfectly (only rub the front at full lock). My wheels are starting to corrode and I'd like to get rid of the spacers. I found some Helo Maxx 791 16x8" wheels with 4.5" backspacing, so they should fit the same as my current wheels but without spacers. But now I need to find a similar tire, and I have searched and searched without answering these couple of questions. How much does the width of the wheel affect the height of the tire? ie. mounting a 265/75R16 on a 7" vs 8" wide wheel. When a manufacturer measures the height of a tire, do they include the tread depth? ie. Is a 265/75 Mud-Terrain the same height as a 265/75 All-Terrain? What I'm really trying to find out is the difference between my current setup and some 265/75 Duratracs. I know 245/75's will fit, but they are a bit shorter and narrower than my 31" BFG's, and I'd hate to go down in size. Manufacturer specs for the 2 tires: BFG Mud-Terrain KM 31x10.50R15 are 30.8" tall on 8.5" wide wheel (I have them on 8") Goodyear Duratrac 265/75R16 are 31.7" tall on 7.5" wide wheel (I would put them on 8") My hopes are my 31's are being pinched a little (8" vs 8.5" wheel) making them about 31.0", and the 265's would be stretched wider making them about 31.5". Then the tread depth is smaller on the Duratracs making them even closer in size, thus fitting without too much more rub! |

31-10.50-15 = 30.7 section width 10.5 on 8.5 inch wide wheel 265-70-16 = 30.7 section width 10.7 on 8.0 inch wide wheel both of the above are BFGs |

265-70-16 = 30.7 section width 10.7 on 8.0 inch wide wheel both of the above are BFGs I did find 265/70's in BFG All-Terrains, but I'm looking for a more aggressive tire. Discount Tire recommended Cooper Discoverer STT's in 265/70, but they were $231 per tire! |

the width of the wheel shouldnt affect the overall diameter. it can effect how the shoulder tread touches the road or how it looks, but the overall height shouldnt change, and if it does, its not enough to notice or change tire sizes over. some manufacturers measure tires differently. it all depends. some people have ran certain size tires in an AT pattern, and some have ran that same size in a mud terrain, and the MT rubbed but the AT didnt. also depends on wheel offset/width etc. but as far as whether they measure from the tire carcass, as an overall standard tire size, regardless of AT/all season tread, or the actual deep mud-type tread included, not sure |
