Post subject:  Bit slippery today

We had our first snow today and the KJ performed miserably on my all season tires that I bought new last year in January. Last year I was bragging about how great it was in the snow and ice, as the performed like a champ.

The tires have about 12,000 mils on them, and all of the siping is still visible. I've probably got about 1/32 to 1/16 inches of wear all around. I'm wondering if it is usual to have that much difference in performance with that small of an amount of wear, espeicially with it very even, as I've rotated four times this year.

After rotation, I clean my spare and apply extreme shine gel on them (every inch). I know you're not supposed to do the tread, but I figured if it sat in the weather / rain for 3k miles, it would mostly get removed, and the rest would wear off in a few hundred miles of driving. It has been almost exactly 3000 miles since I rotated last. I would figure the tires that were being used that had at one point been gel'ed would be clean of it by now.

Any opinions on this? I really doubt that the gel would affect friction after spending 3k miles on the tailgate AND 3k miles on the road. But I'll tell you one thing, my packed snow performance went from "I hope people don't hit me because I'm stopping much better than they are" to "find something soft to run into!".

Yep, not on yet...

Besides, I was going to sell my old all season's to a guy at work for him mom's liberty. I told him how good they were in the snow and stuff. Debating whether I should hold onto them until spring or not just to keep them out of the snow, or if this is just normal for near new tires, to lose some of their grip in the snow.

Rear wheel drive vehicles suck when it is slick... Except to do donunts.... It doesn't matter what tire you have if you are not light on the throttle.... I can spin my mtr's forever.... if I want to.

I turned the Tahoe sideways right out of the drive this morning in 2WD... okay I was testing the waters to see how slippery, but still. I then ended up using 4x4 off/on my whole way to work. Not much you can do when it gets ice under there, short of studs. I thought there was some "snow" tires in your garage

It may just be the weather conditions.... It would seem that this storm has produced a lot of ice.............

My stock tires with less than 4/32" of tread left did not do too bad this morning. On the interstate, there was one long column of cars going at 30mph. I had not problem doing the limit (this is a four lane highway).

I only lost traction once on a green light, which usually happens to me with the first snow of every year. I think these tires (40,000+ miles) will carry me through this winter.

well I'm getting an alignment tomorrow and will probably put the snows on depending the weather forecast.

Chris: I was easy on the throttle. I was just trying to maintain 25 mph and it kept breaking loose my rear and sliding it down the road incline slope.
