I found out the hard way yesterday that my MT/Rs were mounted backwards on my MOAB rims. Some of you probably already know this but I didn't and I wish I had so...

On the new Goodyear Kevlar MT/R tires, the only correct way to mount them on the rim is WHITE LETTERS OUT. Look at the tire closely, like I didn't, on the white letter sidewall it says "THIS SIDE OUTBOARD" and on the black letter side it says "THIS SIDE INBOARD". OF COURSE I wanted black letters out (no offense to those who like white letters out  ) so that's how I asked for them to be mounted which, apparently, is wrong.

Today I took my KJ to ORU in Burbank (really like them) and had them flip the tires on the rims and all seems OK. They actually seem quieter on the street... Odd.

Check your MT/Rs!!! Unless you knew this before you had them mounted on the rims. Also, I was told that putting the tire on backward is a lot harder than the other way and is likely why the other tire was damaged, see this post http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=50725 for that story.

Live and learn I guess... :?

Well if they can not read they shouldn't be mounting tires.I hate directional tires but asymmetrical tires like the MT/R Kevlars are okay as long as there mounted correctly.

I'm waiting for GoodYear to make them all black since I despise white letters out.

The man size (235/85R16) does not have white letters.

Now you tell me. Never liked the white anyway, LOVE the MT/Rs. You might check the inboard/outboard thing JIC.

Or did you already know?

Well brown stinkies, I have had mine mounted and on that way for over 4000 miles with out any issues, What type of problems could be seen for mounting them backwards???

They are all sitting in a storage unit till I get back from Kuwait, hopefully I remember to get them checked when I get back in Aug.

Thanks for the heads up.

According to the email from Goodyear...

----------------

Thank you for contacting our website.

I apologize for the inconvenience that you have encountered.

The Wrangler MT/R has an asymmetrical tread design. Asymmetrical tread is
designed to improve handling and reduce noise. These tires can rotate in
either direction with the correct side facing out as indicated on the
sidewall. Mounting the tires with the wrong side facing out will not damage
the tires; they however will not perform in the way they should.

So it appears thee is no damage done by running them black letters out as we did. I do not like the white letters out and will fix that today with a black marker or sandpaper or.... The white must go.

Being in Kuwait I must assume you're military and I never miss an opportunity to say that the mission you do is appreciated by those back home. Thanks and be careful.

I think I commented on these tires a while back, and someone made me look like an idiot cause I asked if it mattered which way they were mounted. Good to know it was a legit question.

this doesnt make any sense to me. why would it matter if the black letters are out if they say you can rotate them to the other side of the jeep? that means they are not directional.. so if you rotate them from the left side with white letters out..to the right side with white letters out, wouldnt they be going the same direction if they were on the original side with the black letters out? does not make any sense.

You are correct, because they are asymmetrical tires, not directional tires.

They are not directional but they have a "outside" and a "inside",the "outside" must be facing out which happens to have the white letters.

may be a dumb question.. but why does the "outside" have to be out? when you put the "outside" on the opposite side of the jeep it'll be going the same direction as if the "outside" was on the inside of the side it started on? and wheels aren't any different side to side either.

It's just how the tires are made, different tread that needs to be in the correct place,and...................

:google: is your friend.
