choices, choices.

I have been contemplating switching back to my stock 16x7 wheels and running a spacer. My reason for this is that they are lighter then the steel wheel and sometimes but not all the time I get a small amount of steering wheel shake as I drive. I have had my tires rebalanced and it did not correct this. But really it isn't too bad most of the time. I still have some time before I need new tires but I have decided on General Grabber AT2, so here are my choices.

1 - I stick with the steel 15" rim and get the 31x10.5 they are 39pds and measure 30.8 in dia.

2 - Go stock 16" with 245x75 they are 44 pds and measure 30.5 dia.

3 - stock with 265x70 they are 41.6 and measure 30.6 in dia.

1 seems like the best option lighter and taller but I may consider option 2 to run the lighter aluminum but it seems like I am going to even out unless the steel wheels are that much more heavy then the stocker. And I am on the fence about option 3 what would you do, FWIW I got this info off their website.

Hi
im a tire tech and what you are saying kinda sounds like your tires might be cupping or just were not rotated at the right time.

Ditto, the increase (or decrease) of weight with your tire/wheel combo alone will not cause shaking or shimmying. Bad balance, Cupped/poorly worn tires, balloints, or bearings maybe.

tires are good, ball joints are good, bearings good. This has happened since I got the steel wheels. May be a bad balance but I have had that done..twice. Like I said it isn't really a bother. I just don't know what I should do tire combo wise. I just found out the 245x75 are and E rated tire and I don't want that.

so I am either going to stick witht the steel 15" or swap back to stock and run 265x70 or maybe a 75 not sure sure if I want to go that big.

Thanks

A much heavier tire & well combo can exagerate the problems he is describing. I just switched to some street biased p265/70/16's over the e-rated 245/75/16's and noticed an improvement. I did not weigh them but I would put the weight difference between each set at close to 10#'s a corner.

I have been paying a little attention while on the road and i noticed that at the same changes in the road during my morning route the steering wheel starts to shimmy a tad but on smoother roads it is perfectly still. I just think that the steel wheel you can just feel the road changes more and with the alloy. may also have a bit to do with the tire combo.

That being said I am going to stick with the steelie, they just look sexy on the jeep and I want to "tallest" tire I can safely fit on it.

Have you had the balance checked with no weights to see where they are out of balance? Maybe they can figure out where it's out, mark tires/rims, then dismount and move tire on rim. I've seen this help cure balance issues that cause vibrations. I get wierd shimmies on my Tahoe from the front, not all the time or at specific speeds. All were balance, but I get it from time to time.

Dirk at DPG Off-Road told me that many steel wheels are bad from the factory. From his experience, 1 out 4 Cragar Soft 8’s will not balance out. For this reason, he now has a cheaper 15” aluminum wheel that he recommends.
