Standard steel wheels on a '05 Liberty. Wheels are being beat up & the "silver" is being flayed and now I have silver + Black wheels. Any advice on repainting with silver or alternate color. Should paint or just keep out of the places I haunt - beach & woods - wheelcovers are not an option in my opion...Help?...tnx trl

If you live where they use copious amounts of road salt, powder coating is not a wise decision. Not ony is the labor and expense about the cost of steel rims, any scratch allows salt water behind the coating where rust sets up and causes the coating to come off in sheets.

Optimally, the rims will not have tires on them. It makes it easier. If they do have tires on them, take your time masking off the rubber.

I used some el cheapo fine sanding pads from Harbor Freight to scuff up all of the metal surface and to bring the deep scratches down pretty level. The scratches were the reason I painted mine: the off-set of the factory rims makes them suscseptable to off road damage.

Spray the rims from different angles to get good coverage and make sure that you get the paint in behind the spokes. I used several light coats to build up the paint over the parts that I sanded heavily.

I painted my center caps without sanding them first and the paint is holding well. I used paint specifically marketed for painting rims.

I too painted my stock steelies. I removed them from the vehicle, taped off the tires, lightly sanded them and painted with high heat dull black enamel paint used for painting engines.

No problems with adhesion or anything else. Just had all four tires replaced and they will need a lite touch up now near the bead from the tool use. The touch up can be done on the vehicle.

I haven't figured how to post pics on here yet. But if you want to see them I'm on www.Jeepkjcountry.com under the same user name.

I would prime them w black primer, then paint for better adhesion.
