General Grabber AT2 with studs?

Anyone running these? How are these on ice? I'm desperate for an answer.

if you want dedicated stud tires not much is going to beat studded nokian's

just food for thought

i haven't heard anyone mention studding the AT2's so a positive reply may not happen, checked offroaders.com tire reviews and didn't see any stud comments about them

I'm sure they're awesome on ice, but I'm concerned that they won't be good in deep snow. I'm really curious if anyone is running studded Grabbers, because I've heard they're good in deep snow (without studs), but haven't heard anything about ice.

perhaps you could get a sipping knife and butter up the AT2's a bit as well

You can't beat a dedicated snow tire like the one you mentioned above for snow and ice. They do great , but their downfall is they also wear more than a regular tire.
With todays tires you don't see nearly as people running studs as you used to. I used to run them on all 4 wheels. But then I owned a tire shop so didn't cost me anything much :wink:

I know 4 people with Libertys all running some size of the Grabber AT2 including myself. I thought about putting studs in them last winter but after the first big snow storm I decided I didn't need studs. I live on a back road in the middle of now where Ohio and the road never gets salted and I didn't have any issues.

I work with a guy running Grabbers on a Silverado. I was asking him about them because I was thinking about getting a set for the Liberty. He said they rocked and last winter he had no problem going through the snow at all. Didn't mention ice. But if your really that hard up for a winter tire get a dedicated winter tire like Mudd said.

the General Artics are an AWESOME TIRE!!!!! most everyone in our car club runs them at the ice-rallys. they are exceptional tires at a good price!!!! i don't think you'll be disapointed

If you know how to drive you will never need studded snow tires or any other snow tires.A good set of tires is all that is needed.I grew up in deep snow and ice and never needed snow tires,studded or not,and had the best luck with very aggressive MT style tires.Yep the best tires for ice that I have used has been a ultra aggressive MT tire which most seem to think is the worst for ice,and those were the old CO-OP GripSpurs.

I agree that you do not really NEED Snow tires or studded tires in most cases. But if you have the money and want to spend it on them go ahead. I have driven winters with and without snow tires and I think there is a difference and if I could afford to have an extra set I would. Not cause I don't know how to drive or think I can drive like an idiot just cause I have snow tires, but because I personally think it makes driving in inclement weather a little easier. Just my :2cents:

agreed. snow tires do make a noticeable difference. the hardest part is getting someone to buy a set to be convinced of that.

do you need them, no. it is really nice to have them?? yes.

back to the original topic, a #12 stud is approx 9mm x 12mm long, and they are cheap (1000pcs for $55)
the place i go to for tires just got in a new stud gun, not sure why though, they are illegal in WI, but the manager called to tell me incase i wanted to build another set of ice-racing tires. i was surprised at how cheap the studs are, but maybe that's his cost??

my trxus MT's have been the absolute best tire i've used in deep snow and ice. I've used studed snow tires.. BFG AT's Khumo all season.. and the trxus MTs blew them all out of the water without a doubt. ESPECIALLY in slush.

Real simple
dirt, grit, sand get down in the pin holes where the studs are or would be, then with the stud going down in there it continues to push on that dirt and grit and could cause a leak in the tire
Some places I have heard would do it, but every tire company I used to deal with, everywhere I worked at or owned would not due to possible problems later on.
Not worth it

The studs would be to long on a worn tire,and the reasons that Tom has already stated.

Sorry man, but this has to be the most ridiculous thing I've read all day. I know "how to drive". In fact, I'm most likely more skilled than most. (many courses when I worked motorcades as a security agent) If you told anyone here in Fairbanks Alaska they didn't need snow tires they would laugh at you.

Regardless, some people have posted with suggestions of just getting a dedicated set of snow tires. I have a set... currently Cooper MRS or something like that. They've been mounted since mid October. My summer tires are Grabber AT2s. I'm still curious if anyone has ran them with studs and will patiently wait for an answer.
