I am considering painting my new Moabs before I get tires mounted on them. I know some have done this, since I did use the search function. (but you know how the search function works - or doesn't). I'm thinking a gunmetal or graphite color to match my fender flares, since I have a 2006 Sport. Can anyone who's done this give me a how to, or maybe post a link with a how-to in it? If possible I'd like it to be a one-and-done project, where I'm not having to continually touch them up. Also would you recommend waiting till I get tires mounted first, or no? Mods, if I posted in the wrong place, I apologize. Just figured I'd start here. |

Prep is key to any paint job, be it wheels or a whole Jeep. Thats what makes the paint last longer look good longer etc. Take your time in sanding, cleaning, spraying etc. There are ton of information from posts on every car site out there onto You Tube videos on painting wheels, most all have good information |

Like Tom said, Prep is the most important part. My Moabs are powder coated black, but the spare was not. So I sprayed the spare. Make sure to clean and degrease very thoroughly. Then use a very fine grit sand paper to rough the surface for adhesion. Make sure to clean and sand in the cracks and corners. Those are the most common places that end up being a problem. Don't want it to flake or bubble from lack of prep. Make sure to clean again thoroughly after sanding. Then paint with a good quality spray paint. Several light coats are much better than 1 or 2 heavy coats. Then after painted, spray them with several coats of clear enamel. The clear enamel will help keep them durable. Good luck. and don't forget to post pics when you're done. Oh, and it is much easier before the tires are mounted. |

Auto parts stores as well as home depot, lowes etc sell an etching primer for aluminum that is your friend when painting aluminum. Like the others said, good prep is key, light sanding then clean with alcohol and a lint free cloth. Don't use tack cloth here because it leaves a residue. I like micro fiber cloths for this. Then the etching primer in a few light coats, let it sit 24-48 hours and sand any imperfections then several light coats of your paint of choice.
