I will be replacing my tires pretty soon and am wondering if there are any special considerations regarding TPMS. Are there batteries that need replaced? Entire units? Anything? Thanks. |

Typically, the TPMS sensors last 5-10 years. I think when the battery dies you need a whole new sensor. Mine are 6 years old and still work, so I'm going to use them until they die. When you get new tires, they will try to sell you a hardware kit for the sensors. Basically, it's a new set of washers and stem cores that makes sure the sensors seal off properly when they reinstall them with your new tires. The kits are $10 per wheel. About 50% of the time, I have found they are not needed. But the other 50% of the time, if you re-use existing washers, etc. you'll get a slow leak. So I would suggest letting them install the new parts kit on the sensors at the time they install the new tires. The sensors will automatically re-learn on their own after you drive the Jeep for 30 minutes or less. So there is no need to have the shop program them. |

I got new tires in my 06 at a country tire dealer @41K . they made no attempt to sell me anything extra. I asked about the kits and he said we do not normally change them unless the owner reports a leak or we see a TPM light on. Mine have been fine. they do relearn the locations after being rotated and changed on there own. The battery is sealed in the units and the entire thing needs replaced. Rock auto sells them for like $25 each. intresting thing is not all TPM systems can relearn the locations.... my friends 2008 Silverado requires all this crazy stuff to reprogram the tire locations if you don't have the dealers equipment. |
