Forgive me is this has been covered but I get conflicting answers.

I have a Stock 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD The Aluminum Rims are corroding inside and out. I had to break all the beads and sand the inner bead seal to get them to hold air. This is even happening on the Spare which has never been on the ground.

I am in desperate need of new tires unless I take up racing with the slicks I have on there now :D But I hate to spend the money on new tires with the rims look like crap and may not even seal.

My solution is to Dismount all 5 tires Bead Blast them, Use a self etching primer , and then paint and clear the wheels.

Is this acceptable?

A better solution would be new wheels but the money just isn't there.

Used wheels are often pretty cheap - have you checked the forum to see if there are any in your price range? The work you talk about doing doesn't seem too cheap either.

I have and continue looking for a set of wheels locally and online no luck so far. Shipping seams high too I have a tire machine and blast cabinent looking at trying a wheel tomartow to see how it goes

I hear you on the shipping. And also, at least in my case, finding something appropriate to package them in. That's why my old wheels are still in my shed.

Best of luck on getting them to seal. A thin coat of epoxy where the beads go to fill in any voids might be good too, to make a smooth sealing surface, since I'm not sure that bead blasting alone would solve the problem.

Yes...Bead blast the hole wheel in and out. Use a good primer and Paint. I painted mine with Dupont Imron Elite. Its a single stage paint, (no clear) the same paint i use on aircraft i work on. Very durible. I have two PA winters on them and there still like new. Have done this to several cars. Its all about the paint. Any questions PM me.

Some Pictures

First Before, This is not the worst wheel Probably one of the better ones.

Next After Bead Blasting

Then I used Aircraft Stripper and Primed them with Self Etching Primer

Finally Finish them off with a Graphite grey Wheel Enamel and Clear

I did not get all of the clear off and where the corrosion was there is a little pitting I used some filler primer and just went with it I will get some closeups too while they are not perfect they are 10 times better than they were and the bead sealing areas cleaned up very nicely with bead blasting and prime and paint.

There is no need to get all the old paint off. Using Etch primer is key. What type of paint did you use?

Getting the old clear off was for appearance only you can see where the bits of clear stayed on, they sprayed that clear extremely thick. I used Duple-Color Wheel Enamel, That was all I found Locally seamed to work well.
