Hi everybody, I'm new to the club and don't a own a kk yet but will soon be ordering mine due to me wining my lemon law case against dodge. I know I want 4wd but since i've never owned a jeep don't know which it better: the command trac or the select trac?

Just wanted to hear some opinions from people that have owned either or and what the differences are. Thanks.

I went with selec-trac because of the added bonus of being able to drive it AWD. Here in CO we get snow which is eventually plowed but lots of slush on the road so I do not want to be constantly taking it out of 4WD for dry roads. Plus if my wife ever drives the KK then she won't get confused on which drive system it's on. Just my 2 cents...

I put it in Fulltime whenever the road is wet, I leave it in Fulltime most of the winter. Fulltime gives you significantly better traction, better cornering etc.

Definitely worth the extra bucks.

I however would not recommend the trak lok LSD. Save your money and put something better in the back if you go off road.

Yup yup I elected to go with the Select Trac............for an extra $400 it was well worth it............$400 divided by 60 months = .67 cents a month. It's well worth the $.67 in my opinion. Good Luck!

That's my biggest problem with the 18's. I'm hoping I can downsize it to 16's but I have to ask the stealership what I need to do. I probably will have to do a lift.

Maybe I'm confused...I know the Sport version is approx 2 inches higher than the LTD. Just thought I would need a lift to get it on the trails...nothing to do with the 18's.

Maybe I'm thinking of ground clearance. I thought I read somewhere that sport had 9 inches clearance and LTD had 7.2 or some such.

I have the Command Trac and I love it. I live in a snowy area in winter and I do just fine without the Full time 4wd, Part Time is just fine for me. I have also heard that the Command Track is little stronger and more durable. The bottom line in my opinion is that you will enjoy which ever one you decide on.

The single advantage the Command trac has over the Select trac is strength - about 10% stronger - however that's only an issue with dramatic modifications - anywhere close to stock (anything less than SFA) and you won't notice the difference.
However Select trac adds the AWD which may be significant depending on how you drive. (I like it a lot)

From having both t-cases(select-trac in my '01 Grand,command-trac in my '02 KJ) I would say-------

If you plan on offroading the the Jeep I'd go with the command-trac.

If you are not going to offroad the Jeep go with the select-trac.

The command-trac(231) t-case is stronger(more than 15%) and parts are more readily available, you can go to a 4:1 low gear, and you can do a SYE(slip yoke eliminator).None of those mods are available for the select-trac(242).

I see your from Florida so unless you plan on wheeling I see no situation in which you'd need the select-trac since you never see any ice or snow.Get some better tires then the crappy OEM ones and you'll have no problems in the rain.

*EDIT*----Opps forgot the KK's no longer get the 231 or 242 t-cases(NP or NV),some offbrand t-cases now.Have no knowledge on either's strength or reliability.

With how well the ESP works I really don't see the need for the Selec-trac. I barely touched the Part time selector on my sport when it got nasty.

Is the KK's ESP really all it's hyped up to be? The only experience I've had with ESP was in a couple JKs and a Dodge Charger that I drove. The system worked well and did what it was supposed to do, but it was no substitute for 4-wheel drive.

Even trying my hardest I can't get this Jeep sideways, even E-brakes don't help. It just starts to slide out and the ESP straightens it out.... Also works well to prevent excess spinning on traffic lights. It starts with regulating the breaks but if you continue to push it and it will start limiting throttle as well. I really like it.

you can get it side ways, you just have to get a short run at it then crank the wheels, then from that point just feather the throttle

and you can turn the ESP off, I think it still keeps the Jeep from flipping but it lets the tires spin freely.

Cool, lots of good info. I'll probably go with the selec-trac because i'll probably go off road every once in a while. I'm mostly just going to trailer my atv with it, but i do go down a lot of trails you know to like park and stuff. But occasionally i like to get my trucks dirty. Thanks for all the input.

FYI, here's the differences between the (2) systems off Jeep.com

http://www.jeep.com/en/4x4/systems_by_vehicle/

Quote:
Selec-Trac II®

Selec-Trac II supports the new MP 3022 two-speed, full-time active “on-demand” four-wheel drive transfer case. When driving in 4WD Auto mode, the transfer case clutch pack detects wheel slip and applies increased or decreased torque between the front and rear axles based on real-time driving conditions, thus optimizing traction. Under the right conditions, the vehicle can be driven by just one wheel. For added capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain, or extremely poor tractions surfaces, the transfer case includes a 4WD Low mode. Electronic shifting between 4WD Auto and 4WD is accomplished via a console-mounted switch. A 2WD mode is also provided for some markets.

Command-Trac II®

Command-Trac II® supports the new MP 1522 two-speed, part-time four-wheel drive transfer case, featuring smooth operation, shift-on-the-fly capability, and improved NVH control compared to systems with mechanical linkage. 2WD High is the usual driving mode, with the front driveline disengaged from the transfer case and power directed to the rear wheels. Selecting 4WD Lock via the electronic, console-mounted switch locks the front and rear driveshafts together; the two then rotate at the same speed and provide a 50 front/50 rear torque split, providing better traction on slippery surfaces. This transfer case allows for 2WD, 4WD high-range and low-range as well as neutral.
