There have been a couple in the CRD section who have experienced excess oil use, stripped oil plugs and Walley blew his up when nearly new but none of the problems that others have experienced with the CRD have been VM related. The problems have been with the transmission, fuel supply system, emmissions, and wire harness. These are all Chrysler issues not VM. If they use the same principles on a Cummins they will have the same problems.

A US-compliant version of the 2.8 I4 (along with the 4.2 V6 and 5.6 V8) will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant.
Why don't they design a nice smaller Inline 6 Cummins Turbo-Diesel ???

Now THAT would be the **** !! :D

I would love to park a I6 Turbo-Diesel Liberty right next to my 98 Ram 2500 12-Valver Cummins Turbo-Diesel !!!

When is the diesel due to return to the Liberty line ?

the 4BT (4 cylinder version of the Cummins 5.9) is WAY too big and heavy for a Liberty. I've seen one in a YJ on 35s with an atlas, a D44 and 9 inch, and that engine is just plain MONSTROUS.

How about a 4.2L diesel that makes 270 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and gets 20 mpg city, 25 highway?

That's the current status of the V6 that Cummins developed in conjunction with the Department of Energy.
Certainly they can do much better than 25 MPGs!!

My Dodge Ram 2500 3/4ton 4x4 w/Cummins Turbo-Diesel gets 22 MPG!! And it weighs around 7300lbs! Oh yea, it's also putting out near 400HP and 550lbs of TORQUE.

Remember all Jeep and Chrysler cars in Europe are sold with diesel engines, Commander, Grand Cherokee and 300c have the 3.0 v6 Mercedes unit, the KJ, KK , Wrangler and Nitro have the 2.8 VM Motori,, the Compass, Patriot and Caliber come with a 2.0 TDI from VW and even the PT Cruiser comes with a CRD.
Unfortunately, we have a bunch of greedy retards running this country that can NOT figure out how to get those models over here! :x Actually they can get them here IF they wanted to but they DON'T want to !

They (Republicans) want us to keep driving LOW MPG gas hogs so their Oil Executive Country Club buddy's can get RICHER and give them KICK BACKS and make them richer.[/quote]

As long as nobody is willing to invest in cleaner diesel in the US, diesel engines will have to be adapted and chances are you will loose power/reliability in that process.
Actually, they JUST (this past summer) started sell Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel (ULSD) that has 15ppm sulpher content.

I don't know why car companies are waiting to start selling MORE diesel vehicles here. The DEMAND IS THERE!!

I’m no lover of Republican politics, but they aren’t the reason why there are few diesel options in passenger vehicles on US highways. It’s the so-called greens in California that have set particulate emission standards so high that Euro-spec diesel cars and light trucks can’t be purchased or operated in that state. Furthermore, New York and half a dozen other states statutorily follow California environmental standards lemming like. If automakers can’t sell diesels in the largest markets in the US, they're not going to the trouble (i.e. expense) to make them available for sale anywhere.

So really, the blame for so few diesels on US highways belongs at the feet of the Democrat dominated legislatures in California, New York and other states.

although demand is there, the EPA changes what they consider clean it seems like every 5 minutes. this is what keeps diesels from entering the market really. VW has been re-re-introducing its diesels because they have to stop selling them for 6months to a year then can sell them again, then cant anymore, they in 2008 will be able to again. plus diesel engines alone sometimes arent cheap, then throw on the cost of the emissions equipment to make it legal and it becomes quite pricey!

the green states!!! luckily MD is not one of them, so we were able to purchase our beetle TDI after it had been banned from those states and right before it got pulled off of the market.
