Oh, I think you can find people tend to overlook their country's faults no matter where they live. I happen to live in a city with a high crime rate that would be comparable to a lot of U.S. cities, and when I have a minute I'll check but I think we could probably beat most U.S. cities for our auto theft rates.

Edit: It's worse than I thought!

2006
The worst city in the US. for auto theft - Modesto, CA - 1,048 per 100,000 people
The worst city in Canada for auto theft - Winnipeg, MB - 1,932 per 100,000 people

I was reading an article from American Rifleman (NRA magazine) about a story of 3 women who got raped in their own town home. This was right before the D.C. ban. Two attackers broke into their home and attacked/beat/raped one of the women while the other 2 roommates called for help via 911/police. The police told them help was on the way and they went out to the roof to flag the officers down. The squad car arrived but slowly drove by and seeing nothing wrong drove off. They called the police one more time then hid...a 1/2 hour later they came out of hiding thinking a) the men left or b) the police came and picked up the men. Well the rapist were waiting for them and for the next 14 hours they beat and raped these 3 women. All 3 women survived and brought a lawsuit onto the D.C. police and the D.C. courts/appeals courts stated "The duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and individual, no specific legal duty exists" In short the police can't be everywhere they are most needed, law enforcement despite the best of intentions and its officers' dedication-has no legal duty to help you.

That right there sums up why legally owned weapons should be allowed. You can't count on the responsibility of the government or other entities to protect you...even in Canada. I personally think everyone is responsible for their own protection...too many crazies out there who can have access to weapons that do not care for a individuals life but their own.

As much as I would love to continue the topic of guns control and all that jazz, we really need to try to stay away from politics as it against forum rules.

Anyone know how I can fit a Ruger 10/22 w/ folding stock in that little black strap?

Don't carry a gun, but I am a bowhunter. Sure is awkward getting the bow and quiver of arrows tucked behind that little black strap! :(

I couldn't live in a country that didn't allow me to protect myself.

And I couldn't live in a country where I needed to be responsible for my own protection.

2006
Homicide (US) - 5.7 per 100,000 residents
Homicide (CAN) - 1.85 per 100,000 residents

Robbery (US) - 149.4 per 100,000 residents
Robbery (CAN) - 94 per 100,000 residents

But don't misinterpret a few numbers as suggesting I am anti-gun. For what it's worth as a Canadian married to a Texan I found this discussion (in-Jeep storage of a weapon) interesting although foreign to me, although I know many of my in-laws have this very problem.

But enough of the politicking - let's get back to Jeepin'! :)

I have to ad my 2 cents here:
The US population is 304,460,718
Canada population is 33,303,594

The numbers you have don't show that the US has ten times as many people as Canada. So I would say the US is actually better in those categories once population size is taken into account.

The numbers I gave were "per 100,000 residents", so it doesn't matter whether your country has 30 million, 300 million or 30 billion... the numbers are essentially per capita which does allow for a direct comparison. Pick 100,000 residents at random from each country and more from the U.S. group will be robbed or killed than from the Canadian group.

Again, getting back to the original question. Apart from guns, what are people using this strap for? I haven't used it yet and I'm not sure I ever will. It just seems too awkward and I wouldn't want something falling down and getting under my feet.

Mine holds my 4 personal walkie-talkies. They all have a belt clip on the back, so.... why not? :) Can use them to give out to spotters, campers, bikers, etc... wherever my group and I are going.
