This is just an opinion but on the stock KJ suspension is just plain crap. I don't know what Jeep was thinking (or maybe they wern't). My 4x4 KJ would hit the bump stops on speed bumps in my apartment (yes, I was going slow). It is unbalanced, un-tuned, has as much ground clearance as a Mustang, and is choppy as hell.
So, I can understand why it gets really bad reviews in the offroad tests.
On the other hand, add a good suspension kit and a taller tire and the Liberty performs VERY WELL offroad for what it is. It rides great, has a great turning radius and is very sure footed.
I guess the lawers and bean counters took over Chrysler but if they offered an 'offroad' package that consisted of 2" taller springs and shocks and a 31" tire, it would smoke that competition. But then, some fool would just dump it on its side and the suits would get too much heat (see lowering of the KJ when it came out). I suppose it won't be long until we are not allowed to use a stove or oven because it could hurt someone.
