I was going to suggest the vibration angle. You'd be amazed at what can happen over long trips if parts vibrate... even slightly. I once packed a computer monitor in a cardboard box and didn't do it carefully. Then traveled across several states with it. When I pulled the monitor out, the cardboard box had actually sanded down the plastic case of the monitor on one side.

So stranger things have happened.

How's this for a theory? You've got multiple issues that are being conflated into one.

One: your tire is vibrating but not 'melting'. it's just being marred in a way that looks like melt. When you get to your destination and smell the burning rubber, carefully tap or touch the areas you suspect to be overheated. If you are smelling melting rubber, it will be hot at that moment. If it's not hot, then that's not where your melting is occurring.

Two: What you think is melting rubber may be something else entirely. Catalytic converters can put out some odd smells-- usually sulferous. But still, it may smell like melting rubber depending on the circumstances. If you own or have one of those IR thermometers-- you know, the little guns that emit a laser beam and give you exact surface temp measurements-- drive around long enough to notice the problem, then immediately start pointing that at various places on the car that *shouldn't* be hot. You're going to have to have a pretty hot temp to melt the tire rubber. Basically, if something touching the tire is getting hot enough to melt it, it's going to be VERY hot when you stop the vehicle. It won't cool down suddenly so you should have time to verify if any of those parts which come in contact with the tire are at a significantly elevated temp.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.
