I am at about 4500 miles since my first synthetic change, and it has not gone off.

Does anyone know if the oil change sensor is actually monitoring the oil or is it just set to go off at certain mile intervals?

it's all about the math... I don't know what it entails but there isn't a sensor so to speak

So the oil was changed by the Dealer yesterday. When I asked about the 6000 miles the manual suggests, and was told that I drive in "extreme" driving conditions and oil changes are suggested to be done every 3000 miles. The service advisor also went on to say that the manual is designed for vehicles to be run in test facilities not real world conditions. They basically were discounting the manual.

To me this makes it hard to decide where the honest service advice ends and the business begins.

It all depends on the oil used

If you use Joe Schmo oil and Joe Dirt oil filter you want to change it every 3k.
If you use a full synthetic like Mobil 1 with an equally good filter like Mobil 1 then you can extend your oil change intervals.

You will get mixed opinions on this topic all day long ... There is no "right" or "wrong" answer.
You decided on what oil you put in and how long you want to go before you change it.

+100 to mikes post here...

If you really want to know how your oil is doing, send it off to a lab to be looked at.

Amsoil has a kit and a source to help with this.

My rule is watch your oil. Check it every 500 miles on new cars.
on old car check it once a week.

See how the color changes over time. Also feel it.
You will feel a change over time.

Then do some research on everthing you see. Soon you will know when it is the right time for you.

Howdy - just wanted to chime in that dealer comments like "the manual is a misprint" mean absolutely nothing. If the manual contains misprinted information, Chrysler will send you an updated document.

If you get that sort of feedback from your dealer on a regular basis, I'd go find another to work with. It seems there are two kinds of dealers - those who see their job as protecting you from the manufacturer, and those who see their job as protecting the manufacturer from you.

The dealer I bought my jeep from ended up being the latter - gave me a hard time every time I needed service... Brought it in for a Ebrake adjustment - they kept the thing all damned day just to tell me it was in spec and didn't need adjustment. Of course I get it home and the thing slips. Now I take it to a dealer who adjusts the ebrake when I ask him to, and who agrees that all my broken side view mirrors are due to faulty side view mirrors - not due to me driving in the trees.

Especially in this economy, if you're not doing whatever you have to do to get good service, you're just @$#% yourself....
