they were the autolite iridum extremes that i could hear through my radio

it was almost bearable after i put in brand new coils. Almost :)

it seemed like the KJ didn't have enough juice to push the plugs even with new coils so it was feeding back, atleast that was my personal explanation for it since most iridiums have really good ceramics

i ended up throwing them away because they had the screw on contacts but they would have been good plugs, they ran VERY well, perhaps they would do better in the KK's, perhaps the KK has a better capability to drive them or at least a better filtered radio

but nah, didn't run any E3's

on a side note, if i remember right, NGK irids were OEM in the older KJ's

please explain. Did the noise appear after you put the plugs in or after you put new coils in?

tried them before and after I put new coils in, they're just noisy as ****

If a MSD conversion wasn't as expensive as it is, I would have kept them and tried them with higher voltage

sorry if I confused you, i mentioned the coils because as coils age the less capable they are of driving certain high performance plugs which causes feedback in the system which (sometimes, not always) is what you hear in your electronics, other times it's simple RFI (electrical radiation) that's a characteristic of the design of the plug

after i replaced the coils I ran the same plugs I tested prior to the new coils again for ~1000 miles - the autolite double plats quieted down a lot, the autolite irid Xtremes quieted down, but not much - they ran great, but i couldn't stand to listen to the popping and threw them in the garbage

out of the 4 sets of plugs I tested they were the loudest but that doesn't mean that they'ed be that way in a KK, but I'd be surprised if they weren't, the KK and KJ aren't THAT different when it comes to the nature of the ignition system

to answer your question twice, the new coils quieted down the autolite irid X's but they were still unbearably loud

Thanks for the explanation of the noise you heard. One last question, were you hearing it on AM radio, FM radio, or both? Actually, anything you hear in your car radio is RFI or Radio Frequency Interference. There is a LOT of things that can c ause it. Normally your AM radio is effected more, but it can effect either AM or FM.

Thanks for the info, this is all very interesting.

i don't use AM on my head unit but it popped bad enough on FM that all that was really useable was the CD player, and it did pop some on the CD player (thus the symptom of feedback through the electrical system)

the level of RFI in the CB(AM) was roughly S6

that's pretty wild, do you have a stock/factory speaker/amp system for your radio/CD?

Ok so I stopped by Kragen's yesterday and bought a set of E3's. I just had to see what all this controversy was all about first hand.

If the temperature ever gets below 108 every day, I'll go out and get them installed..... heck, it's been 90+ in the evenings at 11 PM.

I'll let you know how they work or if I hear any static on the radio. I'm sure my wife would let me know. That's about all she listens to is AM radio.

I had my E3's in for a few months and didn't have any issues with them. I mainly listen to Sat Radio or my iPod and didn't have any interference with them.

I know, tell me about it. It's been around 104 to 108 for the past week or more and looks to be that way for the next week or more. This heat is really getting old.

I heard it was like 112 in Fresno a couple of days ago. They said it broke a 112 year old high temp record.

global warming

Yeah ... how about it hit a record LOW of 65 this morning ... WTF is going on with the weather? I think the world is coming to an end ...

I would give quite a bit right now for 65 degree weather... It's also pointless to go up in elevation to.... only makes it seem hotter

I lived just south of Fresno back in 2002. As I recall, the highs in July ran anywhere from 105-110 for almost the entire month, with a few excursions above 110. Seems like business as usual to me.

It's been 70s-80s around here the past couple of weeks; very comfortable.

so I went out and changed the plugs today with a set of E3's

I didn't see this in the "how to change plugs" post.

1. I had to pull off the top of the air filter and lay it back for access to the left front plug.

2. I also had to bend the big line coming out of the air conditioner compressor a bit to gain access to the plug. The line looks to be aluminium? could that be? Whose bright idea was it to route that line so you can't access the plug?

3. The dang little 10 mm nuts that hold on the coil packs... after loosening them, they came almost all the way off, then fought me the last couple of threads. I had put the wrench back on to get them off. Maybe dirt on the threads?

4. When they said the OEM plugs were in tight... that was an understatement. I had to put all the strength I could muster behind most of them to break them loose. I assume at the factory, they maybe use an air wrench to install them and not worry about proper torque?

The old OEM plugs were NGK plugs. You do realize that NGK may be made in the USA now, but it's originally a Japanese company.

I will say that the engine seems to start faster and idle a LOT smoother with the new plugs. While the old plugs weren't that bad, you can definitely tell it was about time to change them. They were clean, but a couple of the center electrodes weren't exactly level any longer. They appeared to be wearing/burning at an angle.

The first thing I did was to listen for noise/static/popping on the AM radio, nothing there. I even listened to some very weak stations and listened to frequencies that had no station, and I could not detect any spark plug noise.

hrogi just because is isn't used at the factory doesn't make it junk. NGK aren't used at the factory, are they junk also? What about Denso? What about Autolites?

The original plugs that I took out of my KK today were NGK plugs.

well, stupid me went outside this afternoon when it was about 92 and changed the plugs. By the time I was finished, my shirt was soaked with sweat.

I need a garage.

Sorry to say that will happen everytime you change your plugs since the old ones are worn no matter what plug you use.Save the old plugs,as soon as you get the same mileage on the new plugs go ahead and reinstall the old plugs, bet there will be no difference at all.

now why in the world would I possibly want to do that? Why not just put another new set in?

Spark plugs arnt going to make a huge difference in the 3.7 it's not exactly a race inspired machine so spending thr extra money in my mind just isent worth it.
