I've recently discovered that Cummins is, indeed, developing a new 2.8 litre in-line 4-cylinder. Here's hoping that this little buggar will be available in the 2010 (2009?) Liberty (and Nitro?). Far better a Cummins than another VM Motori (or anything else).

Can you give me a source on that?

No. Given your obvious penchant for unreasonable bashing of the Liberty (and most everything else from Chrysler), I don't think that I will. If you know so darn much about cars, do your own research.

Nothing wrong with the VM...it is the stuff attached to it that has been troublesome...Fuel Filter Head...Torque Converter...CCV System...

I would love to see another Jeep Diesel with a Cummins or VM with the correct tranny setup...

“…unreasonable bashing of the Liberty (and most everything else from Chrysler)…”

I love Jeep, especially my KJ. Jeep has something special – a history stemming from the world’s greatest demonstration of manufacturing, technological and economic might: the American response to World War II. Jeep is uniquely part of that heritage and is a rolling symbol of America's finest accomplishments. To this day they produce the greatest stock all-terrain recreational vehicles.

I want and expect Jeep to make the greatest vehicles. I am critical because it breaks my heart to see the brand become mired in the mediocrity of cheapness and morph into badge-engineered Dodge’s. It may pain you to hear the truth, but relative to the rest of the market Dodge and Chrysler brand vehicles are second-rate, third-tier cars and trucks. They do some things really well but infuse their products with too many substandard components. Jeep is Chrysler Corp’s crown jewel. The rest of the company should become more like Jeep, not the other way around.

Calling crap good is not patriotism or brand loyalty… and it’s really bad for the business of selling cars.

The sharing of platforms (I hate to say it) makes me think a bit less of some of the new Jeeps. The Compass and Patriot are based on the Mitsubishi Lancer platform...shared engines (Global or World...which ever you choose to call them). The sharing of the Nitro/Liberty is along the same lines. This sharing does not neccesarily mean that they are inferior...but it does take away some of the "uniqueness" of the JEEP name. On the other hand if quality products are built and it saves the consumer money (not just the company) then it could be a good thing. Jeep seems to come up with different prototype looks and then builds something completely bland for the consumer. The Trailhawk front end treatment would look great on a vehicle, the prototype for the Compass was unique in it's look...plus the 2 door version was very proportional looking.

Except for the Wrangler...new Jeeps do not give much room to work with in tire size choices.

A US-compliant version of the 2.8 I4 (along with the 4.2 V6 and 5.6 V8) will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant. The engines being built by the joint venture in China (a 2.8 and a 3.8) will be for the Chinese market. (And why the Hell this stupid thing inserts a face every time I hit the number "eight", I have no idea.)

LOL first time I have seen that.....the number 8 followed by the close parentheses ")" is code for the "cool" smiley 8)

First I have heard of this 2.8 too! I wonder how much it looks like the VM :?:

i understand it has nothing to do with the vm and thus looking nothing like it. it might even be safe to assume it will be gear or chain driven unlike the timing belted vm. come on! they gave us an italian diesel with a timing belt? sounds like they are now on the right track! mike

Post subject:  I have a question???

From what I have seen on TV or read. The 3.0 Deisel from the grand cherokee sounds like the answer. since this power plant is already in the Chysler stables. I ask out of ignorance, but from what I've seen and read this power plant fills all our needs;. What are the downside to these motors???

The VM plant is not bad, in fact it is quite reliable, the only problem is that it had to be adapted to the US market as you guys still have the dirty diesel we got away with nearly 20 years ago..

There are no problems with the CRD over here, in fact on my KJ it is the only part I think is high quality (although a bit loud)

VM Motori is owned by GM now so Chrysler has to buy the engines from GM, that is going to be a problem in the near future.

Remember all Jeep and Chrysler cars in Europe are sold with diesel engines, Commander, Grand Cherokee and 300c have the 3.0 v6 Mercedes unit, the KJ, KK , Wrangler and Nitro have the 2.8 VM Motori,, the Compass, Patriot and Caliber come with a 2.0 TDI from VW and even the PT Cruiser comes with a CRD.

As long as nobody is willing to invest in cleaner diesel in the US, diesel engines will have to be adapted and chances are you will loose power/reliability in that process.

Problem with the 2.8 from VM now is that VM had no interest in investing the money in making it pass the new emissions regulations here.

Rumor has it that Cummins is developing an 2.8l I4 turbo diesel along with the 4.2l V6 and 5.8l V8.
If this is indeed the case I can see this being put in the liberty and the wrangler as well. Unfortunately this probably won't happen before 2010-2011 or so :(.

The 3.0 CRD from MB is a really nice unit. I've driven it in the Grand Cherokee and it performs really well. The weight of a 6-cylinder diesel is probably going to be too much for a vehicle the size of a liberty or the wrangler. Though it would be a total monster of course.
