What are our front and rear differentials? (i.e. dana 40...) I was trying to look it up on Jeep's website but I think my firewall at work blocks it. |

Front is a Dana 30a and the rear is a Chrysler 8.25. |

toy4everyseason wrote: thanks! You KK owners get it lucky, the D30A's in the KK's have extra reinforcment in the pinion area for added strength.Notice the extra mount under the pinion area, there's alot more material there to help prevent the pinion and ring gear "walking" over each other a cracking the diff housing. As seen in this pic Diggerfreak posted, the KJ's D30A doesn't have that extra front mount and added material.

OK, so does anyone know why they switched the design on the front driveshaft to a u-joint type instead of the CV type on the KJs? |

so, if they reinforced the pinion area on the D30A for the KK, can the housing be swapped over into a KJ? It would be a good replacement if I ever do bust the front diff. |

I don't think it would fit since they redid the cradle to except the different diff,if you also notice in the 2 pics in this thread that the extra reinforcement is also a mount also which would not clear in the KJ's cradle.Quote: Sorry I was thinking you were talking about the half shafts that go from the diff to the wheels. KJs have a CV joint in the driveshaft between the transfer case and front diff? As a novice off roader that doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Cv joints can be as strong if not stronger then u-joints,the problem lies in when the CV's get at extreme angles that tend to break them. The fact that the front diff is bolted in place and does not move you can control the angles of the joints so the CV ends on the KJ's is as strong as the KK's u-joints,the problem arises from the inability to grease the joints that leads to failure.

I thought the whole frame was redone with the new model and that's why it has a new cradle. Am I wrong on that? |

I was reading a trade magazine recently that said the exact same thing. They were saying that DC was a year or two behind on updating the Liberty because they were busy designing and producing the Compass and Patriot, but they already had the new KK platform designed. They said that they put the Nitro on the upgraded Liberty platform. When they got around to updating the Liberty this year, they used the platform that they had designed for it earlier. |

An i know al had a cradle drop planned for the big 6. Wouldn't that gove a bit more room for the kk axel? |
