Post subject:  Time for an Oil Change

Took my KK in today for it's first oil change.

This is probably the wrong place to post this, but this is about an oil change on my 08 Liberty.

I've already put 1,700 miles on the KK, so I thought I'd get it started on Mobil 1.

I used Mobil 1 exclusivly in my 04 KJ and never had any problems so I figured I'd continue the practice on my KK.

Anyway, I used to buy a 6 quart case of oil at Costco for about $29 and some change. I would always have a quart left over, but never used it. Every 5th case, I'd have enough extra quarts for my next oil change.

I noticed in my KK manual, it recommends 5W30 for oil viscosity.

I found that Walmart has a 5 quart bottle of 5W30 Mobil 1 for $21! That's pretty cheap for synthetic oil. So now I know where to purchase my oil, that's a hell of a lot cheaper than everywhere else, if I buy the 5 quart bottle.

I'm going to continute the practice of taking the KK to the local Jeep dealer for the oil change. They will change the oil (I supply Mobil 1) and filter, and wash the vehicle for $21. Since I don't have a good place to do it here at home, I'll gladly pay them $21 to do it for me.

are you going to put your oil through a centrifuge? LOL

Have you ever heard of Nordberg diesel engines? I worked in a power plant in Virginia that had Nordbergs. We would centrifuge the oil, then send it in for analysys. We only changed the oil when the analysis showed it was bad. If I recall, it would get too much sulphur content in it.... does that sound right? I think it was sulphur anyway.

what brand of oil are you going to use, and are you going to use 5W30?

im going with a 5w-30 castrol full synthetic in the engine and the rest of the power train will be royal purple...as far as the sample, i believe you are right on the sulfur..also the ash content is a key factor

Rick, why change the oil so soon? Is it just because you're switching to synthetic that you are not waiting till 3,000, or is there any benefit to doing the first oil change pre-3,000 miles?

And is there a "best time" to make the switch to synthetic?

I regularly put Mobil 1 in my VW when I bought that new. Figure I'll do the same with the KK, and switch to synthetic with the first oil change. Just wondering when is good to do that...

I don't know, I read pros and cons about the first oil change. I guess I'm from the old school where the engine came with break-in oil that needed to be changed fairly quick.

I know engines are built a LOT different today, but what the heck. I guess I just wanted to get the thing running on synthetic..... oh, and I had an extra $40 to spend before the wife, kids, and grandkids found out about it and spent it for me.

There can also be high concentration of silicon ect. from the build process. I usually change at 1000 and then again at 3000 to synthetic. then after Oil Analysis...I go 7,500 - 10,000 miles depending on results.

yep, ash, sulphur... lots of other things they tested for, but I can't remember them now.

If I recall correctly, those Nordbergs held about 100 gallons of oil. Whenever we would change the oil, we would drain it, then pull the side inspection covers off and use a mop to mop the rest of the old oil out of the crankcase.

We would take the used oil and put it in our Bunker C tank and burn it in the furnaces.

+1

I could care less about my Jeep but one for my bike would help out a lot when tuning.

like i said, my cost is like 12 bucks for the basic analysis bottle..the price include the analysis testing, and a postage prepaid bottle.....after the lab gets your sample, it only take them 24 hours to have every thing done....any one know how much the other places cost

Are you all sure they dont recommend 5w-20 for the 3.7 in the KK's? They recommended that for the 07 KJ's so I find it odd that they dont for the 08's.

I always change my oil at 1500 then again at 3k in a new vehicle. I start using SYN at 6k.

Just called my local CAT dealer. $10 as well. I bet that is about the standard cost. I'll give it a try in the spring when I do the $40 oil change on the bike

yes, you're right, 5W-20 that was an error on my part. The 5W-20 Mobil 1 was $21 for a 5 quart jug at Walmart.
