what does "came back bad" mean? metal particles in the oil? what did the test tell you?

did it just say "resample in 1500 miles?

That test that you were talking about SOS I think the name was.. it's a Caterpillar oil test. When you send it in, do you tell them what kind of vehicle it came out of? I can't imagine them telling someone to retest at 1500 miles on a bulldozer :lol:

The test reads all base metals and Particle Count in parts per million per ml of fluid..
Ag = Silver, Al = Aluminum, B = Boron, Ca = Calcium, Cr = Chromium, Cu = Copper, Fe = Iron, P = Phosphorus, K = Potassium, Mg = Magnesium, Mo = Molybdenum, Na = Sodium, Ni = Nickel, Pb = Lead, Si = Silicon, Sn = Tin,
V = Vanadium, Zn = Zinc, A = Antifreeze, F = Fuel, W = Water, P = Positive, N = Negative, T = Trace, E = Excessive, NIT = Nitration, OXI = Oxidation, ST = Soot, SUL = Sulfation,

The rear diff sample was really high on iron, and the chemist said that he wouldn't leave it in his car

wierd, is there a way to pull a sample w/o draining the diff?

Post subject:

yes....just pull the plug after you drive and either use a suction gun like this one http://www.blackstone-labs.com/pump.html that screws on to the bottle or, use a syringe....[/url]

when you go, have them order a sos-regpq....if you want a sample gun, I think the p/n is 1u5718

sample gun?!? sounds dangerous :shock:

it will take down a elephant at 1000 yds..hehe

the link i posted above shows what it looks like....a syringe will work just fine for a one time use...just make sure if you use it again, it has to be clean

do you think that may be left over from the manufacturing process?

You gotta remember that your gears,engine,tranny,and t-case are still breaking in and 1500 miles is not enough miles to be even close to be broken in yet.So your samples will be off for about 5000-10,000 miles untile the all is broken in.That's why I cahnge the fliulds at 500,1000,2000,then 3000 miles intervels when new(or rebuilt) due to the high amounts of crap from breakin.Oh and if you would have drained the engine oil and put in breakin oil from the get go it's better for the breakin procedure for the first 500 miles.

to answer your question on the machine sampling, the engine is sampled at 250 hours, transmissions and hydraulic systems at 500 hours and axles and final drives at either 500 or 1000 hours and coolant at 1 year or 2000 hours

Theres a form you fill out that comes with the sample bottles, lots of info you provide them with. We've been doing oil samples on the farm here for years. We send in one on our Steiger/cummins, the John Deere combine, and I've been sending in samples now on our Dodge cummins also after I put the Banks kit on it....
