Post subject:  Do I have to read the owners manual?

I had my oil changed for the first time a week or so back. The local Jeep dealer changed the oil.

So tonight, I'm pulling out of the parking lot at work, I hear a single chime, and I notice the odometer display saying "Change Oil". It flashed across the display 3 times then went away.

I drove around for a while tonight, and everytime I turned on the engine, I got the same "Change Oil" display and chime.

Tonight I finally had to read the book about how to reset the "Change Oil" warning.

Turn the ignition switch on, but do not start the engine. Depress the accelerator fully 3 times within 10 seconds. Turn off the ignition.

I guess maybe the dealer doesn't know about that warning being in the 08, or at least they did not reset it when I got the oil changed.

Also, while I was reading the manual, I found out how to calibrate the compass. I haven't calibrated mine properly. I just drove it around in a circle, I didn't put in the local offset number.

Sometimes it does pay to read the instructions. It's a natural male tendency to not do that until you have to.

I got mine serviced today too, at the dealer, and they never reset it either. So your instructions came in handy:)

This happened to me too but I just brought it back to the dealer to fix it, after all thats what I paid them for and its fun to teach all the service guys how to do it too. 3 service guys got in and scratched their heads.. then the lead mechanic had the bright idea to look in the manual.... they were my entertainment for the day.

Well, I tried what the manual said, but it did not reset the Change Oil warning.

So I went to the dealer and asked him. The service manager looked online, or wherever it is his computer is connected to and found the instructions, printed them out, and reset mine.

I guess I didn't push the accelerator fast enough or something. Anyway, he got it reset with no problem.

He tried to give me the paper that he printed, but I told him he needed to keep it and post it somewhere for his service techs to read.

An FYI....

I have about 2,500 miles on my KK. According to the manual, the Change Oil warning goes by driving habits, not by a set time or number of miles. I guess they figured with all the around town driving I've been doing, that 2,500 is time to change. Who knows, maybe the computer knew it was a new vehicle, and figured 2,500 miles was enough and it was time to get rid of the break-in oil.

As soon as I get a new vehicle home, I read the manual from cover to cover--it's amazing what I've found out just by reading and learning.

I am almost positive yours will go off around 2500. I got an oil change light no less than 15 miles after I got an oil change. I think its BS about it being a duty cycle type measuring system.

*Yes I checked the oil to make sure it was full the second that light came one  *

the system can go and blow it self... I'll do the oil change when i want because im not going to have it tell me that i should change my oil at 6000 miles when it needs to be done at 2500 or 3000.

but what if SOS says it doesn't require changing until 10,000?

speaking of oil changes..............

I've been using Mobil 1 oil for quite a few years now, so I guess I haven't kept up with the price of a quart of regular 10W-40 motor oil.

So yesterday I was servicing our little standby generator at work. I went over to Auto Zone and I was shocked at the price of oil. It was $3.09 a quart.

I think I mentioned earlier that I found the 5W-20 Mobil 1 at Walmart in a 5 quart container for $21 and some change. That's only four and some change per quart. Now I don't feel so bad about the price of synthetic oil.

i'm using castrol syntec...it like 19.87 at wal-mart....with the SOS reading, you might be able to extend it that long but i will see how clean the sample comes back before i take action..on most of the tractors at work, by useing the SOS program, most owners are able to extend their service interval by an extra 250 hours....and by doing this, they save a boat load since the cheapest cat oil filter is like 20 bucks and with that amount of oil theses things take (10 gallon of 15w40 for a 330 excavator) it really makes since

Castrol Syntec is $19.87 for a 5 quart container? That's a pretty good deal for synthetic oil.

If you knew how to fix it then whyd you bring it on back to the stealership??

BTW the stealership service guys aint usually worth a dam as far as mechanics go just an FYI  Do the work yourself and do yourself and your jeep a favor...

I knew where to look but that wasn't the point, the fact of the matter is that they did the service so they should do it completely. I had some extra time to kill so I wasn't gonna spoon feed those monkies on where to look, instead they were my entertainment for the day.
