I don't have a good grasp on how this ESP Option works.

Can someone break it down for us ?

It should have ABS (Brakes), ROM (RollOver Mitigation), BA (Brake Assist), TC (Traction Control) and ESP like the 2007s.

From a review I wrote on the CRD at epinions:

What do all these ABS, ROM, ESP, BA and TC letters mean to you? The ABS senses when a tire/wheel is locked up and releases the brake pressure to that tire/wheel to give you optimum braking and steering control in a panic situation. ROM senses when a tire/wheel is lifting and applies braking forces to the other tires/wheels to compensate and lessen the chance of a Rollover. ESP senses "yaw" and adjusts power and or braking. Basically it compares the attitude of your vehicle to the steering input and keeps your vehicle stable during understeer or oversteer situations. BA automatically adds brake pressure near the end of a stop to decrease braking distance. TC does two things. On Road it senses tire spin and applies braking pressure to stop uncontrolled tire spin. Off Road this also acts like a traction device and directs more power to the tires/wheels that have traction to keep you moving in loose conditions. You do have the options to "turn off" the ESP but the other functions still operate normally.

Like magic that's how it works. No really, I love the thing. On slippery surfaces it does its job like a champ. Once it starts to get sideways it corrects itself. I've also taken a really sharp turn at 70mph and was fine. I didn't mean to do it but the ESP is what kept the jeep upright. I know because I heard it kick in.

OK when you go four wheeling in mud and tough stuff, shift to nuetral, then to 4 wheel mode, then hold the ESP button in till you see in the instrument cluster it switched off, the point being, with esp on in 4x4 wont let your wheels spin if they need to to get more traction, that why you turn it off for more traction. When done fouring just shift back into 2drive on fly and esp will automatically kick back in lessening steps. Takes about 15 10m secs to switch off ESP and makes huge difference, find some mud and and do it with it on and then off and you'll see what I mean. matt

When shifting to 4 hi, dropping into neutral is unnecessary.
