I was at my local Jeep dealer yesterday checking out an 08! (Much improved over my wife's 05 Rocky Mountain Edition! BTW)

The salesman said that the 3.7L engine is a NEW engine based on the V-8 4.7L. Not like the old 3.7L (like in my 05) that's based on the V8 5.2L 318ci.

Is this true ?

Umm, No. The 3.7 is virtualy identicle to the 4.7 minus 1 set of slugs. I believe they updated some thing on it (intake and such) for 08 though.

Hes one of those salesmen who has read enough brochures to be dangerous, I always like to deal with them and play with their minds a bit!

Tell the salesman, that you are a little bit uncertain about trying out a first year production engine, since it isn't 'tried and true' yet.

Reminds me of my salesman.

I asked him what happens if I push the tow/haul button while driving?
"Umm don't know, press it"

What does this button do?
"I don't really know"
Oh wait its a jeep doing downhill with a spedo .... must be downhill decent. :?
"Yeah I think your right"

ok. i have to give these dealers some forgiveness becasue this IS a new vehicle with new features however, didnt they go to a training for it at all??? or do they just go in to work one day and the general manager goes "oh hey guys by the way the new kk's are in. if you get a moment sit in one and get familiar with its features, but if you dont feel like it dont worry about it!"

Should of figured.

These salesmen go by the old adage (if they don't know the answer)...BAFFLE EM WITH BULLS**T !"

That said, the engine in the 08 Lib I drove DID feel much more responsive than the engine in my 05 Lib.

What exactly did Jeep change/update in the new 08 Liberty's engine over the previous model ??

The KK's intake is the same as the intake on my '02 KJ,even has the same casting plugs for the intake siliencer that the '02's had on the intake.

The engine is unchanged. The gear ratio in the axles actually got worse ( 3.21?). What you are feeling is an engine control program designed to make the jeep feel faster by controlling throttle tip-in, etc...

Your salesman ( Erwin?), being an idiot, is confusing the 3.9L v6 available in the Dakota & Durango & Ram for awhile with the 3.7L.

Not to mention that the 3.7 has single overhead cams whereas the LA engines like the 318, 360 were pushrod motors. I think the 3.9 magnum V6 was based on the old V8's, though, but I could be off on that.
